GENESEO, Ill. (February 22, 2024) — In 2023, Wyffels Hybrids achieved ten years of consecutive growth, delivered more than one million paid units of seed corn, broke ground on a new Iowa site and completed a new Quality Assurance Lab at their Atkinson Production Facility.

To keep up with demand and growth, the family-owned seed company created new roles and hired 20 fulltime employees for their Geneseo, Atkinson and Ames facilities.

Quality Assurance Lab

The new Quality Assurance (QA) Lab was completed in time to process the 2023 seed production harvest for validation, comparing the results with the existing quality assurance process.

“The new lab increases germination testing capacity threefold,” says Rodney Gilbert, Wyffels QA Director. ”We’ve increased efficiency for our test sizing and physical purity processes, while maintaining the above industry-level quality standards Wyffels is known for in the seed industry.”

The lab is staffed by five team members, including four new employees.

Kelly Grief leads the team as QA Lab Manager. Grief attended Iowa State University and majored in Agriculture and Society, Seed Science. She is a Registered Seed Technologist (RST) and a Canadian Food Inspection Agency accredited seed grader. For the last six years, Grief worked for Corteva as a Seed Quality Testing Team Lead.

Kyle Wallman, Quality Assurance Specialist, is responsible for the development, documentation, and implementation of the Production Quality Management System for ensuring consistent processes across sites. Wallman attended the University of Nebraska and worked as a Research Associate, gaining experience in plant transformation and genetic testing. Prior to joining Wyffels, Wallman worked for Corteva as a Seed Quality Process Lead.

To complete the team, Jaselyn Robertson and Barb Scott will deliver germination and test sizing results as Quality Lab Technicians. Robertson interned with Wyffels Hybrids prior to graduating from Iowa State University with an ag business degree and minor in agronomy. Scott brings years of experience from the Corteva/ Pioneer Woodhull production location, where she worked in their lab as logistics coordinator.

Human Resources

“It’s our goal to lead our industry in attracting top talent. We want to hire the right people and retain those team members,” says John Wyffels, Wyffels Hybrids President.

To achieve those goals, Wyffels added two new Human Resources leadership roles.

Tom Nuss, Chief Human Resources Officer, focuses on strategies to serve the existing business, develop employees, add capabilities, scale operations and evolve culture for growth.

Stacy Speidel-Holke works closely with Nuss as Manager of Talent. Speidel-Holke will focus on talent acquisition, talent development and organizational planning capabilities. Prior to Wyffels, she served in leadership positions with UnityPoint Health for ten years.

Production/Iowa Site

Wyffels Hybrids will open their new Iowa Site in Ames, Iowa, in late spring 2024.

Ryan Kunze, Warehouse and Distribution Manager, is currently working in the Atkinson Production Facility to make a seamless transition to the new Wyffels Hybrids Iowa site. Prior to joining Wyffels, Kunze managed warehousing and distribution for Caseys and Atlantic Bottling. He reports to the new Iowa Site Manager, Steve Woodall.

Additional seed production forecasting and planning will be managed by Nate Beavers. Beavers brings years of experience to Wyffels from his previous position as Supply Planner for Syngenta and managing trucking logistics for Heartland Express.

Additional new hires at the Atkinson Production Facility include: Mike Goethals, Production Technician; Justin Taets, Jose Bermudez, Dan Stahl, Dawson Schulenberg, James Padilla, Erik Brudos and Jesse Peed, Production Associates; Todd Balensiefen and Taylor Goodwin, Service Technicians.

Sales Administration

Clay Edwards joined Wyffels in August 2023 as the Sales Strategy and Operations Manager. Edwards brings more than 15 years of experience, including Area Business Manager for Stone Seed and various roles with Cargill. Prior to joining Wyffels, Edwards was leading efforts to launch Cargill’s RegenConnectTM Program. Edwards is responsible for development and coordination of Wyffels sales strategies and effective execution of sales activities.

Customer Support

Wyffels Hybrids is proud to serve more customers than ever before throughout the Central Corn Belt. To help maintain the level of customer service their customers expect, Lisa Phillips joined Wyffels as Customer Support Associate. Prior to her role at Wyffels, Phillips held multiple positions in quality and customer service, including building an in-house distribution department, supporting a sales team, processing orders and managing accounting for a national brand.

“We’ll remember 2023 as a year of achievement and it will forever mark key milestones for our family-owned company,” says Wyffels. “Our growth wouldn’t be possible without our employees and we’re thrilled to welcome so many talented people to our organization. It’s been an incredible journey for more than 75 years and we couldn’t be more excited about the future.”

Londen Fulks Gets Her Chance at Miss Illinois

In recent years Londen Fulks has sat in the audience of the Miss Illinois County Fair Queen pageant cheering on some of her closest friends, but this year she’ll have her chance to walk across the stage representing Henry County in hopes of being selected to reign as the 2024 State Fair Queen.

Londen is the 19 year old daughter of Jason Fulks and Nicole Fulks and is from Atkinson.  She competed in the Henry County Pageant last June, winning the title just four years after she was named the 2019 Junior Miss Henry County.

“It has been an absolute pleasure to represent a county that I love so dearly,” said Fulks. “I’ve learned a lot about my community, and I’ve made some incredible memories during my years as queen. I can’t wait to walk across the stage in Springfield and I hope to make everyone proud. “

Fulks will compete for the state title January 12-14 at the Crowne Plaza in Springfield. The state pageant is held in conjunction with the annual convention of county fairs, the Illinois Association of Agricultural Fairs (IAAF).

“I’ve been working primarily on interview and perfecting my speech,” said Fulks. “I have loved getting the chance to talk to past Henry County queens about their experiences at state and it’s made me that much more excited for this weekend. I can’t wait to make forever friends and memories.”

Fulks is contestant number 20 of the 73 young women competing in this year’s pageant. Each contestant will have a four-minute interview with the panel of judges, and will also compete in evening gown, swimsuit, and speech categories.

The top 16 finalists will be announced on Sunday, January 14. Each finalist will re-compete in the evening gown, swimsuit, and speech categories. They will also be judged on three pop questions. The new state queen will be chosen and crowned that evening.

She is currently a freshman at Iowa State University majoring in animal science on a pre-veterinary track with a minor in ag communications. She plans to attend veterinary school and pursue a career as a production and small animal veterinarian. She is currently a member of the Pre-Veterinary Club, International Agriculture Club, and the Vet-Science Team. She has been on the high honor roll, received an award for the highest GPA in FFA, and was a recipient of the Geneseo High School Ag Alumni Scholarship.

Geneseo Local Punches her Ticket to Miss Illinois

On Saturday, December 16, 2023, Olivia Egert of Geneseo, Illinois was crowned Miss Peoria Metro 2024 at Illinois Central College Performing Arts Center, IL. Egert will represent the Peoria Metropolis area at the coveted Miss Illinois (a state preliminary to Miss America) competition in June. Egert is currently a sophomore at The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in the Division of General Studies.

Egert is a 2022 Summa Cum Laude graduate of Geneseo High School, holding presidency/leadership in her class, Key Club, Student Council and other service organizations. Becoming hands on with so many service organizations in high school, Olivia fell in love with the idea of leadership. In her high school career, Olivia founded her community service initiative “Project Next in Line: Building the Leader Within You.” In her platform, Olivia focuses on the pillars of student activism, student volunteerism and student leadership among her generation to develop strong and effective role models for the youth in our communities to look up to.

At 12 months old, Olivia was adopted from China by her parents, Ryan and Penny Egert. When Egert started her journey in the Miss Illinois’ Teen organization in 2019, she came to the decision to share her story for the competition’s Talent/HER Story judged portion. Her monologue shares intimate details about her adoption including awareness of China’s one child law that was present when she was born. The original piece morphs into an appreciation for freedom and her pride for being an American Citizen. Olivia’s HER Story, Proud to Be An American, has helped her earn over $2,500 in scholarships through the Miss America Opportunity. During her reign as Miss Peoria Metro, Egert hopes to impact her community through Project Next in Line and its complimentary pillars.

The 2024 Miss Illinois Competition Finals will take place June 12-14, 2024 at the Marion Cultural and Civic Center in Marion, IL. She plans on continuing her preparation by volunteering in her community and marketing herself amongst the state of Illinois.During the state competition, the delegates were scored in five categories - an individual interview with judges (30%), Lifestyle and Fitness (20%), Talent/HER Story (20%), Evening Gown (20%) and Onstage Question (10%).

GENESEO, IL—The Illinois Critical Access Hospital Network (ICAHN) announced its “4 Under 40” Hospital Leadership winners, including Colton Anderson, Director of Clinic Services, Hammond-Henry Hospital, Geneseo, during the organization’s 20th Anniversary Annual Conference held November 28 and 29 at the I-Hotel and Conference Center, Champaign.

He is joined in this honor with Ashlyn Housewright, Executive Director of Community Health & Wellness, Memorial Hospital, Carthage; Lindsey Culver, Director of Radiology, Lawrence County Memorial Hospital, Lawrenceville; and Jessica Diane Carter, Director of Nursing Services, Ferrell Hospital, Eldorado.

Anderson has been with Hammond-Henry Hospital for nearly 15 years, beginning as an x-ray technologist in imaging, and has worked his way to his current position. He considers Geneseo his hometown, being a proud resident since sixth grade, and cares deeply for his community. He is heavily involved in various community organizations, such as the Annawan Kiwanis Club, and also serves on the administrative team and Culture Committee for Hammond-Henry Hospital. Anderson’s deep connection with his community and organization has led to monumental changes in clinical operations. He started his leadership career in the Colona Clinic, where he was promoted from Clinic Lead to Clinic Supervisor. From there, he, and other individuals, expressed the need for expansion.

Anderson played a key role in opening the Annawan Walk-In Care Clinic, the Kewanee Walk-In Care and Family Practice Clinic, and the Geneseo Walk-In Care and Family Practice Clinic. Moving forward, Anderson was promoted to Clinic Director and supervised openings of the Cambridge Family Practice Clinic, the Orion Walk-In Care and Family Practice Clinic, the Port Byron Walk-In Care and Family Practice Clinic as well as Surgical Care Clinics in both Geneseo and Kewanee. Stephanie DeMay, Marketing Manager at Hammond-Henry Hospital, describes Anderson as someone who has both integrity and accountability.

“It is difficult to select only one trait when it comes to Colton, as his every decision is determined by whether it meets the high standards he sets for himself, and also whether it will be in the best interest of his staff, the hospital, or the community he serves,” said DeMay. “On more than one occasion, he has humbly put his best interests aside to put the needs or wants of his staff, or his family, to the forefront. Colton ensures others feel ‘heard’ and not left out.”

Anderson makes occupational medicine a priority and visits employers throughout his service area to assist where is needed. He has a focus on providing healthcare to all ages in his community, and plays a large role in helping to bring in specialists such as audiologists, cardiovascular medicine specialists, endocrinologists, nephrologists, ophthalmologists, orthopedists, podiatrists, pulmonary/sleep medicine specialists, urologists, and highly qualified general surgeons to offer consults and perform surgeries.

ICAHN’s “4 Under 40” Hospital Leadership Award is open to new and emerging leaders aged 40 and under employed by an ICAHN member hospital or as a member of this hospital’s board for at least two years with a strong record of innovation and outstanding performance.

Located in Princeton, IL, ICAHN is a network of 59 small, rural hospitals dedicated to strengthening the operations of its member hospitals through collaboration. The organization is composed of Illinois hospitals who have earned critical access hospital designation by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services and is recognized nationally for its work with rural healthcare, administering several state, federal, and private healthcare programs.

Geneseo Christmas Walk: Gingerbread House Party!

November 20, 2023
Zack Sullivan, Executive Director Geneseo Chamber of Commerce 309-944-2686

GENESEO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ANNOUNCES THE 2023 GENESEO CHRISTMAS WALK: GINGERBREAD HOUSE PARTY

The 2023 Geneseo Christmas Walk will take place Saturday December 9th from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm in Geneseo, IL. This year’s theme is “Gingerbread House Party.” The 2023 Geneseo Christmas Walk promises to be the biggest Christmas party in Geneseo this holiday season!

The 38th annual Geneseo Christmas Walk is hosted by the Geneseo Chamber of Commerce. Zack Sullivan, Executive Director of the Geneseo Chamber, commented about the 2023 event saying, “The Geneseo Christmas Walk hosts one of the best small town holiday celebrations in the Midwest. Many people travel from afar to attend this annual community event, the biggest event Geneseo hosts all year. The annual Christmas Walk themes change year to year, and the event is very versatile. Half of the fun of planning the Geneseo Christmas Walk is integrating a theme into the event. We thought it would be fun to do a “gingerbread” theme this year, as we have not done this theme yet and want to offer a fun, modern, and vibrant theme of celebration in 2023.”

Sullivan said, “The Geneseo Christmas Walk is a kaleidoscope of holiday offerings, including live music, holiday shopping, warm meals, ice sculptures, living windows, luminaries, trolley rides and so much more! This has always been one of my favorite events in Geneseo. People from throughout our region make the annual trip to Geneseo to celebrate Christmas time!”

The Geneseo Christmas Walk has something for everyone. The Geneseo Jingle Run 5K race kicks of the big day’s festivities at 8:30 am. The Lighted Christmas Parade is a popular regional attraction, which steps off in Downtown Geneseo at 5:00 pm sharp. The parade leads up to the traditional Tree Lighting Ceremony at approx. 5:45 pm at the intersection of State and Second Streets. Meanwhile, the Central Bank Pavilion will host a Holly Jolly Christmas Party from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm – featuring holiday themed dance music from a live DJ, a walk-through Christmas light display, and ice sculptures.

Another new attraction in 2023 will be the Gingerbread House Competition, hosted by the Geneseo Art League & Gallery, located at 125 N. State Street. Visitors to the 2023 Geneseo Christmas Walk are invited to visit the Geneseo Art League & Gallery to vote for their favorite Gingerbread House. The winner will be crowned Grand Champion, will win a $100 Geneseo Chamber Gift Certificate, and will earn bragging rights for life.

The Geneseo Christmas Walk started in 1986 as the Geneseo Victorian Walk, offering a unique way to celebrate Christmas in Geneseo while providing a boost to local small businesses during the holiday season. Since then, the event has become an all-time favorite for Geneseoans and visitors from the Quad Cities region alike – capturing the wonder and charm of experiencing Christmas in a Hallmark Christmas Movie- like small town setting.

The evening will be filled with Christmas magic in Geneseo and we invite you to join us both that evening and at any time in Geneseo, IL. While in Geneseo, visit our many fine restaurants and shops. Most events are free unless otherwise indicated, some meal and warming sites will accept free will donations.

For more information, call the Geneseo Chamber of Commerce at 309-944-2686, or visit the Geneseo Chamber’s website at www.geneseo.org for a full schedule of events.

State St. in downtown Geneseo, and pick up your FREE wooden scarecrow starter frame and information sheets. Then, get busy! Get creative! Bring your finished scarecrow to the Geneseo City Park on Saturday, October 28th between 9:00 am -10:00 am where all the scarecrows will be exhibited on “Scarecrow Row.” EVERY scarecrow will receive a special ribbon, with Geneseo Chamber Gift certificate prizes being awarded to the top three Scarecrows on display.

The public will be invited to come to the City Park to view the scary, exciting and weird creations. From 10:00 am-12:00 pm candy and Halloween treats from Geneseo businesses will be distributed to children visiting Scarecrow Row. Families are encouraged to come to the park dressed in their Halloween costumes. A free Halloween themed photo booth will be set up at the Bandshell, providing a fabulous photo opportunity. Scarecrows will be on exhibit throughout this special Halloween Saturday until 4pm.
