At The Geneseo Current, our mission is to provide accurate, fair, independent local journalism that informs, engages, and strengthens our community. We believe readers deserve transparency about how we operate, how editorial decisions are made, and how we manage relationships within the community we serve.

Editorial Independence

The Geneseo Current maintains a clear separation between editorial content and business operations.

Advertising, sponsorships, marketing services, event partnerships, and other business relationships do not determine whether a story is covered, how it is reported, or what conclusions are reached.

Editorial decisions are based on newsworthiness, public interest, accuracy, fairness, and available evidence.

Businesses, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, schools, elected officials, and advertisers are all subject to the same journalistic standards.

Our Relationship with Advertisers

Advertising supports local journalism, but it does not influence it.

Advertising does not purchase editorial coverage, and editorial coverage is not conditioned upon advertising. Organizations may receive favorable, neutral, or critical coverage regardless of whether they advertise with The Geneseo Current.

Likewise, organizations that do not advertise with The Geneseo Current receive the same opportunity for fair, accurate, and newsworthy coverage.

Our advertising and editorial decisions are made independently of one another.

Accuracy and Fairness

We are committed to:

  • Verifying information through reliable sources whenever possible.

  • Reviewing original documents and public records.

  • Seeking comment from individuals or organizations when reporting on matters that directly involve them.

  • Presenting information fairly and in appropriate context.

  • Distinguishing factual reporting from analysis, commentary, and opinion.

  • Correcting factual errors promptly and transparently.

Our role is not to advocate for predetermined conclusions, but to provide readers with accurate information that helps them make informed decisions.

Public Records and Accountability Reporting

Many of our stories rely on public records, including:

  • Ordinances and resolutions

As a locally owned media company, The Geneseo Current works with many organizations throughout the community.

These relationships help support our newsroom, but they do not influence our editorial judgment.

Disclosures

When we believe a reasonable reader would benefit from knowing about a relevant business or professional relationship, we will include a disclosure within the article.

Examples may include:

  • The subject of the article is a current or recent advertising client.

  • The Geneseo Current has provided marketing, photography, video production, or other media services related to the subject.

  • The Geneseo Current is a sponsor, media partner, or participant in an event discussed in the article.

  • Another relationship exists that a reasonable reader could perceive as relevant to the story.

A disclosure is intended to provide transparency—not to suggest that coverage was influenced.

Opinion and Commentary

Opinion pieces, editorials, and commentary are clearly identified as such.

These articles express viewpoints or analysis and should not be confused with straight news reporting.

News articles are written to present verified facts fairly and accurately. Commentary exists to encourage discussion and civic engagement while remaining grounded in facts.

Community Relationships

As a community-based news organization, we regularly interact with local leaders, business owners, nonprofit organizations, schools, healthcare providers, and public officials.

Maintaining professional relationships allows us to gather information, understand community issues, and better serve our readers. Those relationships do not prevent us from asking difficult questions, reviewing public records, or reporting on matters of public interest.

We believe accountability journalism and respectful professional relationships can—and should—coexist.

Corrections

Despite our best efforts, mistakes can happen.

If we discover a factual error, we will investigate it promptly and make corrections when warranted. Significant corrections will be noted within the article whenever practical.

Readers who believe an article contains a factual error are encouraged to contact us and provide supporting information so we can review the concern.
