Dogs of all shapes and sizes, and people of all ages turned out for the Doggie Easter Egg Hunt Fundraiser sponsored by the Henry County Humane Society – Geneseo Shelter, and for the Public Family Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by the Geneseo VFW Auxiliary and AgFarmacy in Geneseo. Both activities were held Saturday with the Doggie event held in Geneseo South City Park, and the activity for kids, held at the same time in Geneseo’s North City Park. Those who attended the event sponsored by the VFW and AgFarmacy were asked to bring a canned good to benefit the Geneseo-Atkinson Food Pantry.
A highlight of the day was when a helicopter flew overhead North Park and dropped 4,000 candy-filled plastic eggs which had been taped shut. AgFarmacy provided the helicopter as a highlight of the event and the VFW Auxiliary provided the candy-filled eggs.
Rhonda Borkgren, secretary-treasurer of the VFW Auxiliary, said even though the day was a success, “It seemed that we had too many people attend for the size of the park.”
Borkgren said the event may be held at a different area next year.”
The Doggie Easter Egg Hunt Fundraiser offered plastic eggs filled with doggie treats and prizes were awarded in raffle drawings. Prizes were provided by Geneseo Super Wash, Geneseo Quik Lube, A Spotted Apron and Village Home Stores.
Linda VanDerLeest, president of the Geneseo Shelter board, said there were about 60 dogs with their owners at the “hunt, “and we had families attend together,” she added, “For example, there was a mom and dad, with two daughters, one boyfriend and two dogs.”
“Everyone who was there appeared to be having a good time, even the dogs,” VanDerLeest said. “It was fun to watch the dogs that could actually sniff out the treats and see the fun they were having.”
“It was an awesome community event, and we want to thank the Geneseo Police Department for all their efforts in making the day a success,” she added. Photos by Claudia Loucks
