The grand opening of the Geneseo Public Library Reading Garden will be held as planned, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1.   After the ribbon cutting, which will take place promptly at 5:30 p.m., additional activities will take place inside the library due to the extreme heat.

Sol’s Legacy Ministries miniature ponies will be present near the Reading Garden.

Raffle drawings will be held for 250th anniversary items, plus six Kids’ virtual reality headsets and an android tablet.  Sign-up begins today, (Monday, June 29) at the library, and those who sign up must be present at the grand opening Wednesday to claim their prize.

Refreshments include decorated cookies by “I Bake it That Way Bakery,” popsicles and ice-cold water; and tote bags, wristbands, candy and lots of other free items will be given away.

Reading Garden coffee mugs will be available as patrons leave Wednesday’s event.

Claire Crawford, library director, said, “We’re so proud of the three book benches created by artists at RutabagA, Geneseo Art League, and David Smith Studio.  They look fantastic now that the Wild Ones of the Quad Cities have planted native plants around the garden.  The stadium seating and large pergola are not yet complete, but we’re getting there.

It’s a shame the weather has gotten so hot, but people still will be able to walk out to the garden and take a look at it, have a photo opportunity at the butterfly wings, and pet the miniature horses provided by Sol’s Legacy Ministries.”

She added, “Our donor wall is in the process of being created by artist Sally Gierke, and it will be gorgeous with it’s done.  And finally, we have big plans for the Butterfly Garden, thanks to the AARP, Abilities Plus and Apex Energy grants.  Lots going on around here!”
