Even though twin sisters Taylor and Sierra Krueger had never been to a wrestling meet, they both wanted to try something new and are now part of the Girls’ Wrestling Club at Geneseo High School.
Most recently, the twins both won their matches at the girls’ senior night wrestling meet held Dec. 19 at GHS.
The twins admit before going out for the GHS Wrestling Club, they had never been around wrestling, and Taylor Krueger said, “When girls’ wrestling started, I was really interested in it because I wanted to try something new. I knew wrestling would be a great way to stretch and strengthen my muscles and also build a great cardio.”
Sierra Krueger responded, “It interested me because it was something new to experience and great to be a part of the first Geneseo Wrestling team at Geneseo High School. I also would like to come out of wresting in great shape to be ready for my next sport, track.”
“Wrestling not only builds cardio, but it creates a mental toughness with monitoring weight while still trying to perform well. It’s really your body over your mind,” she said.
The twins are seniors at GHS and when asked if they would be interested in wrestling at the college level, Taylor said, “I feel it would be an amazing opportunity to wrestling in college, but I am choosing my college for academics, and if sports are available, then that would be a bonus. Wrestling is just something I wanted to try, and I want to be able to make a positive impact on the first-year sport for GHS girls’ wrestling. I truly do hope that Geneseo girls’ wrestling continues strong for years to come.”
Sierra Krueger said even though she knows wrestling in college would keep her in great shape and help her make new friends quickly, she also has chosen to focus on academics only…”Like my sister, I wanted to try something new and I hope to influence others to follow in my footsteps and try new things.”
Sierra added that she is enjoying being part of the girls’ wrestling club because, “It is something new for not only me, but for GHS…I really enjoy my teammates and the atmosphere the coaches have at practice and meets. They are always there for us to talk to and they make things enjoyable while still teaching us moves. I like how the coaches take the time to critique each individual wrestler to make us the best wrestlers we can be. The coaches also accommodate us to adjust practice to what moves we specifically need to work on. My teammates are also positive and we cheer each other on.”
Taylor Krueger answered, “I enjoy being in wrestling because the atmosphere is so supportive and the teammates are really great people to be around. The coaches know how to help the wrestlers become better at technique and strength. They really give each wrestler one-on-one coaching, especially when it’s just you out on the mat during a match.”
She added that the coaches also “really focus on building each wrestler into a strong young adult while making wrestling fun. Being in wrestling has really built my mental and physical toughness.”
