Hazel Harris, an eighth grade student at Geneseo Middle School, is the winner of the Daughters of the American Revolution essay contest, which was sponsored by the Geneseo Chapter of DAR,
The writing prompt of the contest was “The Second Constitutional Congress in 1775-1776.”
Harris, daughter of Rachel and Shawn Harris, is a student in Jeff McAvoy’s class at the middle school. McAvoy said writing the essay was not an assignment in his class…”It was optional and she chose to do it.”
Harris had to imagine being a delegate and had to decide which colony she was from as well as what she would fight for in Congress…”This took a lot of research along with the difficult task of putting oneself, as a 21st century American, back into an 18th century mentality”
She competed at the Chapter level against multiple entries throughout the area. Her essay will now be in competition at the state level and may then compete at the division and national levels.
