BISHOP HILL — The Henry County Historical Society needs new board members to keep its museum operating. Only six board members attend regularly, and the society says the museum will have to close if no one new joins.
The museum in Bishop Hill preserves and shares Henry County history through exhibits and educational presentations about the county’s people, places, and events. The society hopes to update its exhibits, attract more visitors, and work more closely with local schools.
It also faces building needs, including work on the roof, electrical system, and heating and cooling system. Recruiting younger board members is another priority. The society hopes they will bring new ideas and help guide the museum for years to come.
Board members attend one meeting a month from April through November and help with museum events. Those who are available may also volunteer for a museum shift during the summer. An interest in local history, a willingness to serve, and creative ideas are welcome.
Afternoon meeting times can make board service difficult for people who work during the day. The society also faces the broader challenge of attracting younger people to community organizations.
There are ways to help without joining the board. Volunteers can greet visitors during the summer or assist with educational programs for schools.
The society has not announced a closure date. Anyone interested in board service or volunteering can contact Roy Swenson at 309-927-3528 or 1963hchs@gmail.com.
