On Saturday, April 30th, the second annual Artwalk was held in downtown Geneseo. Due to potential weather, the event was moved indoors to local businesses. I stopped at the “The Vic,” and it was there I ran into Chamber of Commerce director Zack Sullivan and asked him some questions.
Sullivan said “Geneseo is known as a regional art destination with three outstanding art galleries, a couple of music schools and music shops. So the arts play an important role in Geneseo, and art is very important at the high school level and beyond. When you come into town there’s a sign that says six time music champion.”
I asked him how the Artwalk helps promote local artists of all kinds. Sullivan continued, “We have a lot of local and regional artists here today. It’s our chance to make the arts shine in Geneseo and that’s one of the roles the Chamber of Commerce plays. It’s our opportunity to tell the story of our culture through the arts.”
Our conversation continued and we talked about how the pending weather changed his plans for the event and said how local businesses stepped up. Sullivan said, “It’s a great event. A lot of people came together to make this happen. The support of the school district is incredible and also the help of the downtown businesses who are hosting artists today.”
Only being in it’s second year, Artwalk is a great local event. It will be fun watching it grow into a Springtime festival in Geneseo.
