Virgil Thurman has been named Volunteer of the Month at the Geneseo-Atkinson Food Pantry, where he has been volunteering for eight months. He drives “Clifford,” the Food Pantry’s big, red van to Jewel and Aldi grocery stores in Silvis to pick up food donations each week. He loads the food from the stores to the van and from the van into the Food Pantry.
He and his wife, Cathy, have three adult children – Matthew, Andy and Claire.
Thurman enjoys reading, physical activities (gym and tennis) and drawing.
As a Food Pantry volunteer, he said he enjoys the people he has met and the satisfaction of being able to contribute to the Food Pantry’s mission. His most memorable experience is driving “Clifford,” and (trying to perfect his parking skills,) as well as meeting all the people involved, including the people at Jewel Food Store.
Nicole Freadhoff, assistant director at the Food Pantry, said, “Thank you for your help in providing food for those in need, Virgil”
