GENESEO — The Geneseo girls tennis team claimed a sectional championship, finishing atop a 10-team field with 23 points, three ahead of runner-up Rock Island Alleman.
The Lady Leafs were led by seniors Vi Pettit and junior Jaylee Brudos, who captured the doubles championship. Senior Kendyl Wassenhove and junior Stella Smith added a third-place finish in doubles competition.
In singles action, junior Anastasia Pitsoulakis placed fourth, contributing to Geneseo's team championship.
Rock Island Alleman finished second with 20 points, followed by Peoria Notre Dame with 16. Galesburg placed fourth with 10 points, while Sterling and Macomb tied for fifth with eight points each.
Geneseo's strong doubles performances helped secure the sectional title against a competitive field.
All five Lady Leafs qualify for the IHSA State Tournament next weekend.
Next Up: The IHSA State Tournament is October 22-24 in Buffalo Grove and Hershey, all depending on seeding.
