Since the rise of social media, many high school football fansites have gone by the wayside. But there is one that is still very active.

Geneseofootball.com was started in 2001 by Garrett Newman. While it has changed and evolved over the years, it has always stayed true to its roots. When asked how the website has stayed active for so long, Mr. Newman said “I’m just doing my part, keeping my commitment to keeping the football tradition alive in Geneseo.

Head coach Larry Johnsen said the website is an integral part to the football program in Geneseo. “It’s the place people go to find out what’s going on with the football program in Geneseo. It’s been very beneficial for us and we’ll never be able to say thank you enough for the time and work that goes into the photographs and the website.”

Initially, Geneseofootball.com only featured a few photographs that people were kind enough to share. It was, however, only a matter of time that Newman decided to begin taking photographs of his own. “Jim(VanOpdorp) started taking pictures first. But I’ve been taking pictures since 2004 and it’s been a great addition to the website and social media pages.”

Brian Haars and his wife Jessi, sent two footballs around the country to be signed by four former Green Machiners that made their way to the NFL. One belongs to Garrett Newman, Brian’s Brother. The other was given the Geneseo High School Athletic Department. Brian said “We need to have something together with guys while we’re still able to.”

It was quite the task to contact all four men, Barry Pearson, Derek Allen, Jake Verstraete, and Drew Himmelman. “They jumped on it right away, they thought it was awesome so we started mailing the ball around the country and got it done.” Haars said.

Haars continued “All four of them said Geneseofootball.com is how they can still keep up with the Green Machine.
