The Geneseo Community Unit School District #228 Board of Education will review the district’s Fiscal Year 2027 tentative budget when it meets Thursday, August 13.
Assistant Superintendent and Chief School Business Official Tim Gronski will present the proposed budget before the board considers placing it on public display. Final approval is expected in September.
The tentative budget projects a $975,805 deficit in the Education Fund, with an estimated year-end balance of approximately $3.85 million. Transportation is also projected to operate at a small deficit, while the Operations and Maintenance Fund is expected to post a surplus.
Overall operating-fund expenditures are projected at approximately $37.65 million, up 5.72% from FY26. Among the largest increases are employee benefits, which are projected to rise 29%. District officials have identified health insurance, special-education costs, transportation reimbursement and employee costs as key financial pressures.
The district also reports approximately $1.77 million in FY26 sales-tax revenue, up 15.26% from the prior year.
The longer-term budget outlook includes plans to align staffing with declining enrollment, use attrition to reduce positions over time and continue monitoring district reserves and operating deficits.
Other agenda items Thursday include policy updates, board strategic planning, committee appointments, personnel matters and a proposed FFA trip to the National FFA Convention.
The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at the District Office, 648 N. Chicago Street, and is open to the public.
