Henry County officials have begun examining the data center industry as part of discussions within the county's Planning and Development Committee, according to records obtained by The Geneseo Current.
During the committee's October 13 meeting, members received educational information about data centers, an industry experiencing growing demand as businesses expand their use of cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and digital services.
According to the meeting minutes, the department distributed general information about the industry to help committee members become more familiar with the subject. Additional discussion is expected at a future meeting.

Henry County's initial discussions come as local governments across the region examine development opportunities associated with emerging technology and energy infrastructure.
The Planning and Development Committee is also considering proposed regulations for battery energy storage systems, which can store electricity for later use. During the same October 13 meeting, committee members recommended advancing an ordinance amendment establishing regulations for commercial and private energy storage systems.
The committee's next regular meeting was tentatively scheduled for November 10, when additional discussion of the industry may occur.
As Henry County continues examining the subject, questions remain about whether officials intend to develop specific zoning standards for data centers, whether prospective developers have approached the county, and what infrastructure considerations could influence future proposals.
For now, the committee's review represents an early step in familiarizing county officials with an industry that could present new economic development opportunities as well as regulatory and infrastructure considerations.
