In 1922, a group of 54 sportsmen and businessmen met at the Chicago Athletic Club in Chicago, Illinois, and formed the Izaak Walton League. Under the leadership of the League’s first president, Will Dilg, the organization grew exponentially over the next few years.
The Geneseo Chapter of the Izaak Walton League was founded in 1934 on the same principles of conservation and education as the national organization.
The chapter’s pledge remains the same: “To strive for the purity of water, the clarity of air, and the wise stewardship of the land and its resources; to know the beauty and understanding of nature and the value of wildlife, woodlands and open space; and to preserve this heritage and mankind’s ability to share in it.”
Over the years, the Geneseo Chapter of the Izaak Walton League has striven to uphold its pledge to the preservation and ecology of greater Geneseo by maintaining Ike’s Park and providing easy access to fishing along the Hennepin Canal.
In association with the Illinois Division of the Izaak Walton League of America, the chapter helps oversee and maintain the Goose Workshop educational facility, located on more than 200 acres along Route 6 just east of Atkinson.
Each year, the Geneseo Chapter provides a scholarship to a high school student who intends to pursue an undergraduate degree in conservation or an environmental-related field.
The chapter is also a chartered partner for both a Boy Scout troop and Pack 100 in Geneseo.
Ike’s Park is open to the public for family camping, picnicking and boating from April through October. Campsites have running water and electricity available throughout the season.
The Lodge is available to rent throughout the year. It features a full-service kitchen, restrooms, tables and chairs and seating for up to 90 people. The Lodge is heated during the winter and air-conditioned during the summer. A concrete patio with picnic tables and a charcoal grill is located adjacent to the Lodge kitchen.
The Geneseo Chapter is a nonprofit organization that relies heavily on fundraisers and private donations to meet its program goals. Donations are always welcome and greatly appreciated.
The 2026 Ham & Bean/Soup Supper is a major fundraiser that helps pay for the chapter’s annual property insurance.
Farmer’s vegetable soup with cornbread and a beverage will be served. Live music will be provided by Paxton Sherbeyn.
