Auf Wiedersehen!! - By Dan Dauw

Geneseo Ducks Unlimited

The 43rd Annual Banquet will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2023, at the Best Western Inn, 315 Canal St., Annawan, IL. If you’re a hunter guy or gal, you do not want to miss this event. There will be lots of new guns (over 40) and lots of raffles to win one. There will be live and silent auctions plus a ladies’ raffle. It is not just firearms, but all kinds of outdoor related items you will have a chance to win. So, there will also be a kids’ raffle. Now get this, we all know how great German shorthair pointers can be for hunting and companionship. Well, you will be able to get a chance to win a 7 week old shorthair pup courtesy of Barn Ridge Kennels. One year, Tom Vandemore, duck hunter, won an all expense trip to Colona, IL. He was soon run out of town! Keith “Gunslinger” Vandewoestyne won an autograph photo of “Dan D Outdoors.” After much bidding, Keith won with a bid of 25 cents. Okay, to be serious. The dinner at the event is always excellent! I would also suggest you arrive early to check-out all the cool items. As to cost, a single person is $65.00 which includes a one year D.U. membership/magazine and a meal ticket. For a couple, it’s $90.00 with the same benefits, but two tickets. For youths (Greenwing) age 17 and under, the cost is $30.00 plus membership, DU magazine and 1 meal ticket. No tickets will be sold at the door. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. with dinner served at 6:00 p.m. Because of space I can’t cover all the neat things about the event. I do have to say that Dale and Linda Doubler and their many volunteers do an outstanding job putting on this big event. The deadline for tickets is September 11, 2023. Checks payable to: Geneseo Ducks Unlimited. Send to: Dale Doubler, PO Box 142, Cambridge, IL 61238. Any questions call Dale “Double barrel” Doubler at 309-945-3516.

Dental Jokes

What do you call an Irish dentist? Thomas McCavity. What did the nosey tooth say to the dentist that was leaving his office? “Please fill me in tomorrow! What was the dentist from Panama doing in Geneseo? He was looking for the Hennepin Canal.

Fall Swap Meet

Also, on Saturday, September 9th, is the Fall Swap Meet at the QCCA Expo Center, 2621 4th Ave, Rock Island, IL. The hours are from 8 a.m. to 12 Noon. There is plenty of parking and admission is free. The event is a buy, sell or trade of new or used hunting, fishing, camping or trapping related items. No guns or live ammo allowed.

Maple City German Band

“Banddirektor,” Tonya Miller, and her musicians, Jenna Freadhoff, Isabella Haney, Linda Flat, Tony Hernandez, Julia Buzard, Luke Larson, Adam Schnabel, Jason Stone, Mark Mowers and Kevin Nichols did a super job playing German waltzes, polkas and other popular German songs. Their July 25th concert was held in the Geneseo park. Fortunately, it was not real hot outside so it brought out a lot of concert goers. The Henry County Humane Society did the ice cream social. Lorna got us some brownies and ice cream. Sure was good! Missed seeing Bob and Jan Sellman as I got to talk’n too much! Jan is one of those gals that just doesn’t age. Something in the water? There was a break in the concert and Linda Vanderleest from the Humane Society announced there was extra food for sale. She gave me one of her “special” cupcakes, but it tasted like cyanide. Glad the hospital wasn’t far away. I hate having my stomach pumped!! “Auf Wiedersehen!!”

Geneseo Big Band

This excellent band will perform on Tuesday, August 8th at 7 p.m. in the Geneseo Park. The ice cream social will be hosted by the Inspire Continuing Care. They will start serving at 6 p.m. C-U there!

Humor

Last week I saw Ray Rogers fishing from a bridge. I asked him why he was fishing from a bridge? He said he was trying to catch a train. The other day I could not get the stupid hook out of a fish’s mouth. It was just a big pain in the bass! I don’t know why fisherman, Vic Bianchetta, worries about getting Covid-19. He never catches anything, anyway!
