Bluebird yes, bluebird no!

Geez, it’s almost every week we get a new species of bird at our feeders. The latest was last week when a “blue” bird paid us a visit. No, not the traditional “bluebird.” No, this bird was completely blue in color. It was beautiful, for sure. We looked in one of our bird books and it had all the signs our brief visitor was an indigo bunting. We haven’t seen it since.
Some other observations we’ve noticed from bird watching are as follows: A red-breasted woodpecker always raddles and pounds on the rain gutter before he jumps on the suet cage. I think it’s some kind of warning. As I mentioned last week, Baltimore orioles are not the only fathered friends that enjoy grape jelly. Catbirds, cedar waxwings, house sparrows, and grossbeaks once in while like a shot of grape jelly.
We get all the local species of woodpeckers except the pileated woodpecker. Ah, but we know he’s out there in the woods somewhere. We can hold up our iphones and it can identify various bird sounds. All of the woodpeckers, especially the harry and downy, take over the suet cakes many times. The nuthatches come in a close second.  Something I notice when it starts to get dark. The cardinals and the orioles dominate the feeders as the other birds seem to roost earlier. Less competition, I suspect. We quit putting out oranges for the orioles as they much prefer their grape jelly.

 Quips

1)    The cause of most traffic accidents is too much horsepower and low I.Q.
2)    There are only two kinds of liars in car accidents: Both drivers!
3)    Two heads are better than one “except” in a head-on collision.
4)     If your car brakes fail, try to run into something cheap!
5)    Since most accidents happen at home and in traffic, the surest was to be safe is to leave home and sell your car.

Cape Cod

My mother and step-father lived many years on the ‘Cape. Most of the time Lorna, myself and the kids packed up the old buggy and drove there (1,200 miles).
As the years went on, we flew to Boston and took a “puddle jumper” to the Cape. We had a lot of fun times and met some really nice folks.
Well, our daughter and husband asked if we would like to go with them to the Cape.  As for us, a trip whale watching is a must.  We always found it fascinating to see these giant mammals.
One time a whale came right along side the boat and turned on its side showing its huge eye. There are two long time friends we must see. Got to have a Lobster roll, maybe two…maybe three!! They are both retired teachers and even though they are both near the 90 mark, they are really sharp. In short, if you ever get the chance, visit Cape Cod.

Geneseo Ikes “Youth Fishing Contest.”

This is a big showtime, especially for kids ages 2-16.  The event will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2025, starting at 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Registration begins at 11 a.m. Parents and Grandparents are more than welcome. The contest is free for the public and donations are welcome. Free lunch for all will be provided after the fishing. Bait and fishing gear will be available for use.
Free giveaways for all contestants, door prize drawings and trophies for winners.  The event takes place at the Ikes Park, 1 mile north of Geneseo, along the Hennepin Canal. Look for the event sign.
Any questions call Justin Shoemaker at (309) 269-3107 or Dan Dauw at (309)796-0795.  As I said, the kids and everyone will have a great time.

Yay, Rain.

It was about time, Mother Nature, to give most of us a good soaking two weeks or so ago. Our rain gauge showed 3 ¼” over the span of 4 days. Hopefully, most area farmers were able to get their planting in before the monsoon.

Good Fish’n!

Maybe you have had this fishing experience like I had two weeks ago. Gary Dahlquist, Tom Simpson and myself were fishing from shore on a beautiful morning. Both Gary and Tom were really nailing the bluegills, crappies, bass and Tom’s big channel cat (he let it go).
So, where did it all leave me? I had a few in the fish basket, but not the numbers these guys had. Ah, but wait! Lady Luck didn’t leave the party. All of a sudden, I had so many nice bluegills I could only use one pole. I told those guys the ‘gills finally recognized who had all the cards. I only had a few worms left, but a lot in the fish basket. Of course, we had plenty of fish to clean, but the end result will be some good eaten meals.

Gnats

They are one big pest. When they get really bad I have a ballcap that contains netting. You just pull it over the head and shoulder. Kind of a pain, but better that than getting eaten alive by those *&^Y$%$79!!!!!

Birds

This Spring we made sure we had lots of feeders for our feathered friends. Because of that, we have seen a lot of species we’ve never saw before.
For example: Cat birds, Baltimore Orioles, Northern Flickers, Red-headed Woodpeckers (my favorite) and a few others I can’t remember. We have 3 glass feeders for the humming birds plus certain podded flower plants for the little guys. We just have two so far.
We have a downy woodpecker who thinks he’s a humming bird and drinks his share of sugar water. He is very tame and drinks right in front of me.
Baltimore orioles have their own feeder which holds oranges and grape jelly. They are such a beautiful bird.

Dien Bien Phu - By Dan Dauw

New Pope

It’s too early as to say which way Pope Leo XlV wants to steer his flock of 1.4 billion Catholics. I don’t really care whether he’s a Sox or Cubs fan. Okay, maybe I’m happy he’s a Bear’s fan. So much for my shallow thinking.
I do hope he can make good decisions during his time on this earth.  I really enjoyed watching the event on TV.

 Memorial Day

It used to be known as “Decoration Day.” It honors all the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.
It originated during the American Civil War when citizens put flowers on deceased soldiers and sailors that were killed in battle. It is always celebrated on the last Monday in May. In this case, May 26, 2025.

Dien Bien Phu

Last Christmas I received a book from our daughter entitled, “Guerrilla Warfare,” by William Weir. It tells about various irregular warfare in the 20th Century.
I had not heard those three words (DBP)in years, but there was a chapter about the fighting in the 1950s between the French and the Vietnamese guerrillas of the Viet Minh Army.  The French did win some battles, but the major battle for Dien Bien Phu was won by the Communist because of superior number of soldiers and weapons provided by China.
As you know, we took our hand at fighting the North Vietnamese in the 1960-70s and to no great purpose. Russian troops fought several years in Afghanistan and also ended with no purpose.  Of course, we went into Afghanistan and we ended up with no purpose except providing the “bad guys” with tons of weaponry. Will we ever learn?

When I wasn’t Old

My fascination with firearms goes way back to, I think, 1949-50. My dad had a friend who was in the war and brought back a German rifle. The rifle had no stock and for some reason he gave it to my dad.  He made a Bishop sporting stock for it and from then on, I was hooked. Still have it today.

When I was about age 11 or 12, Jimmy Anderson and I went hunting on a farm by 2nd St. in Moline. The farmer passed the word that anyone on his property would be shot at with his “salt ‘n pepper” shotgun.  I’ll be darn if that old farmer did shoot at us one time, but at a long distance. One would have to be 1 foot away to be injured by a shotshell loaded with “salt and pepper!”  We had Crossman pellet rifles and hunted rabbits all the way to Rock River.

Another time Jimmy and I had BB guns shooting at sparrows in Stephens Park, just off of 7th St. in Moline. A Moline Police car pulled up and the officer said to go home. I was “so” scared and told the officer I’m sorry and he can have my BB gun.  He said he didn’t want my BB gun and to go home, which I did.

Gardening

Lorna and I enjoy working outside. Our larger garden has 20 tomato plants, and rows of onions. We used to plant beans, but the squirrels dig ‘em up. We have a resident raccoon that takes his share, too! We love flowers and if you drive-by you’ll see what I mean.
The one negative is our front lawn. We recently hired CurbAppeal, Carbon Cliff, IL, to spruce the lawn up like it was before the grubs did their dastardly deeds.

 Flowers, Vegetables & Birds

We do so enjoy watching all the various birds that come to our feeders. We love the hummingbirds. We have plants for hummingbirds and three bottled feeders on our upper deck.  We have three flower gardens in the back of our house.
Unfortunately, at our age it makes it very difficult to keep everything how we want it.  My sense of balance is horrible even with a cane or walker.  Both Lorna and I have had our share of falls. We do have great next-door neighbors, the Putnams, that help us a lot.

Worth Reading?

I really don’t know how many people read this column. Maybe 10, 25 or hundred(s)? Do me a favor, send me an e-mail (deboonelr@aol.com) if you like or dislike the “Dan D Outdoors” column. Feedback, good or bad, is always welcome.

Bear’s Schedule Ugh!

The “Monsters of the Midway” better live up to that title because they have a really tough schedule. The NFC North is one of the toughest divisions in the NFL. All three teams, Vikings, Lions and Green Bay made the playoffs. They have some tough non-conference games, too! My Super Bowl is beating the Packers!

Olivia Egert

This young lady, who attends the University of Illinois, is going to make a run for the Miss Illinois USA Pageant on Friday, May 23, 2025. She has already won the Miss Mississippi Crown Pageant, 2025.
She belonged to the Geneseo Kiwanis Key Club. The Kiwanis members donated money towards her adventure. The pageant will be held at the Illinois State University’s Braden Auditorium, Normal, IL.
Tickets range from $91.00 to $99.00. I am not to sure there are any tickets left for the pageant. Miss Egert gave those donors an autographed photo and personal note thanking them for contributing to her fundraiser in benefit of the Miss Illinois scholarship.
If you ever had the chance to talk with Olivia Egert you cannot help feel she is a very special young lady. Her personality matches her beauty and that says it all.  We wish her the very best at the pageant.

 10th Year Anniversary

That being the “Vintage Farm Equipment Show,” on Saturday, September 13, 2025, Bridge Park, Rock Island Avenue, Atkinson, IL.  It’s about 4 months away, but Dave Carton, Show Garu, already has the flyers distributed at various places in Henry County.
It is free to the public with displays such as Horse-drawn equipment, hit-miss engines, Farm tractors and equipment, Lawn and garden tractors (stock ‘n custom), Vintage farm trucks and motorcycles, Horse ferrier, and Blacksmithing demonstrations. Food & modern restrooms are available with plenty of free parking for your Rolls Royce.
I will be giving presentations at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. on “Aircraft Carriers.” Hope to see you there!

 Henry County Museum

It is now open daily for visitors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It used to be a school with each “classroom” showing different theme of antique artifacts. For example, the farm room displays buggies, plows, etc.  My favorite is the “Military Room!”
If you love history and antiques, make sure to visit this museum located at the corner of Knox and Park St., Bishop Hill, IL.  Great restaurants, too!!!

 Geneseo Ikes “Youth Fishing Derby”

This popular event is not too far away! The derby will begin at 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for kids age 2 to 16. It’s all free including lunch and prizes.  It will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2025, along the canal at the Geneseo Ikes campground, 1 mile north of Geneseo on Rt. 82.
All kids must register at the brown building next to the canal.  Bait and fishing poles will be provided if need be. Winners are determined in each of 4 age groups (2-5, 6-9, 10-12 and 13-16). This event is really a fun time.

When I Wasn’t Old

1)A buddy and I used to walk through alleys searching for items that people put out in the trash. We were in our pre-teens and lots of kids would do the same fun thing. I can’t remember any of the junk we took, but it wasn’t stealing. It was fun.

2)There was a mild earthquake in Moline when I was a teenager. I cannot remember when it happened, but I do remember it was all the talk.

3)I took a fishing trip once with some guys to Wisconsin. One night a friend and some others tipped over a single hole’r. There was a girl inside that the guys knew and she was mad. She didn’t get hurt. Ha! Years later the one kid graduated from West Point and was mayor of Davenport.

4)I had an aunt who became mentally ill. I liked her. Sadly, I remember one time seeing her dancing in downtown Rock Island. There was no music and she had no partner. She ended up at a mental institution in East Moline. Later it became a prison which is still that today. Her husband had serious booze problems, and they had three daughters. That is a sad story in itself.

5)“Go fly a kite!” That was a fun thing to do many moons ago. I wonder if kids do that anymore. Yeah, probably not! Lots of times my kite would find itself a tree or a telephone pole.

 Humor

1)I forgot when Lorna’s birthday is so I asked her when her birthday was? She said, “March 1st.” So, I walked around the room and asked again.

2)Our daughter accidently took her cat’s med’s last night. Don’t ask “Meow.”

3)Our son’s dog accidentally ate a whole bag of scrabble tiles. So, he took him to the vet. Still no word yet.

4)Next week we start “Diarrhea Awareness Month.” Runs until Friday.

5)If a child refuses a nap, are they resisting a-rest?

Fisherman Never Tell a Lie - By Dan Dauw

PaPa laid to Rest

Pope Frances was certainly loved by many for his kindness and his protection of creation. He was a man of peace and a man of the poor.
I think it was said that about 600,000 individuals attended his funeral. The Mass held outside of St. Peters square was amazing to watch. I viewed the ceremonies from 2:30 to 4:10 a.m., but I fell asleep.  I thought the ABC network did an excellent job of covering the entire event.
In early May of 1963 a Navy buddy and I took leave to see Rome and the Vatican City. The pope then was John, XXIII, and we were able to see him give his blessing to a huge crowd. He passed away about a month later on June 3, 1963.
It will be interesting to see who the Cardinals pick as a successor. Pope Frances was a good and honorable man. May he rest in peace!

 Nature’s Creations

This plant nursery located at 21229 N. 500th Ave., Kewanee, IL, is one AWESOME place if you want a giant selection of flowering plants and vegetables for all your gardening needs.  We have been going there for a fair amount of years now.
Ryan Werkheiser, owner and grower of Nature’s Creations, along with family members, have an amazing business.  They are open for business Monday thru Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday/Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more info go to: naturescreations92@yahoo.com Lastly, they are hosting a Garden Party, May 3 & 4, 2025.

  Fareway Cookout Fundraiser

Last Friday Lorna and I volunteered to help out at the Geneseo Izaak Walton Club two-hour cookout outside the store.  There were about 10 volunteers. It is really nice that Fareway sponsors the two-hour cookout on Fridays for various non-profit organizations.
I was pleasantly surprised that so many individuals also donated money besides purchasing “hot-off-the-grill” brats, porkchops, etc. A big “Thank you” goes to Fareway and all you folks who helped make our fundraiser so successful.

 Donate Blood

That is, unless you’re shy on the amount of iron in your blood. That happened to  me last Friday morning at ImpactLife Blood Center, Moline. It was only the second time I had to reschedule my appointment. The next time, before I leave home, I’ll eat a hammer, railroad spike and a tire angle. That should work!

 Fishing’s been Good

Make sure ‘yer getting out to drown some worms. I’ve been using minnows and trout (red) worms. Bluegills, crappies and bass have been hungry. Last week I caught the biggest largemouth bass, ever!  After netting it, I let it go. I should have taken a photo of the big fish, but I didn’t so you’ll have to trust me. Fisherman never tell a lie.

 Humor

My wife, Lorna, told me to put ketchup on the shopping list. Great, now I can’t read anything!

A guy tried selling me a coffin. It’s the last thing I need.

Lorna told me I needed to stop impersonating flamingos, I just had to put my foot down.

Steve Kasstorff’s New Book

“Called Up From Henry County to the Majors” is the new book authored by Geneseo’s Steve Kastorff. He has authored 7 or more books. I just started the book, but so far, it’s very interesting.
I’m not a big baseball fan, but never-the-less it has lots of historical facts about local and national baseball. We have most of his books and they are always worth reading. The book sells for a reasonable $20.00.

 Leave them Alone

The Illinois DNR has issued their annual reminder to us all, this spring and on, mature wild animals may be having their young. Young birds, known as fledglings, often leave their nest before they can fly.
Whether birds, deer, skunks, rabbits, and so on, do not disturb the young wildlife.  If you see a young deer (fawn), it does not mean necessarily it has been abandoned. That can be said about other animals, as well.
It is also important to keep children and pets away.

Get the Tips, Stop the Ticks

With the nicer weather many of us will enjoy the outdoors.  If walking through the woods or tall grassy areas, make sure you’re protected from ticks.
These nasty little creatures can spread bacteria, viruses and pathogens that causes human diseases. Before entering the jungle, consider using insect repellant and tuck your pantlegs inside your stockings. Self-examination for ticks after being outside is a good idea, too.
If you try to remove a tick, make sure you use a tweezer and gently remove the “entire” tick. You do not want to just get a part of it. If you become sick notify your doctor.

Crappies

One of the more tasty gamefish is the white or black crappie.  Three weeks ago I cleaned 23 of them and only one was without eggs. Last week I caught two.
Fishing buddies, Gary Dahlquist and Tom Simpson, did better with 22 bass (released) caught by Tom and 7 crappies by Gary.  My point is, I wonder if they (crappies) are shutting down because of the spawn?
Ha-Ha! I have to find some excuse with just two fish!

Henry County Historical Museum

Located on the corner of Knox and Park St., Bishop Hill, IL.  It is open starting May 1 through October 31, 2025. Open daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It was a school at one time and it all located all on one floor. They are celebrating their 41st year as the historical museum of Henry County.

 Bishop Hill Quilt Show

I never realized until not long ago what a big attraction there is in the world of quilts. On May 17-19, 2025, the Colony School in Bishop Hill, IL, will host quilts that are antique, miniature, patchwork, applique or something else.
Admission is $5.00.  They will be open on Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The Colony School is located at W. Main St.

 Humor

I told Lorna she needs to embrace her mistakes. So, she gave me a hug.

That’s Why We Have Remotes - By Dan Dauw

Dean Yoder

Great to see Dean back after a scary ‘bout with a stroke. Thanks to the good Lord, Dean is almost back to normal.  He lost some weight, and while that wasn’t the best way to lose some pounds, he’s in good shape now.
He told us he will continue with Strawberry Flats. That’s good news. While it was a rough road, God was in no hurry to have Dean show up there. Ha-Ha! Wait! What’s the alternative if not “up there?”  In all seriousness, it’s nice to see this Dean back in the groove!

 Daylight Savings Time

Personally, I wish our law makers in Washinton would do away with the ridiculous changing of the times.  I took a survey on how many clocks at our house need their hands moved backward or forward twice a year. Living room, 2. Kitchen, 1. Bedroom (1), 2. Bedroom (2), 2. Bedroom/Computer room, 1.  Bathroom (1), 1. Bathrooms (2 & 3), 0. Downstairs, 2. Wrist watches, 2.  Outside deck, 1. SUVs, 2.
So, if I do the math, we have to change 16 timepieces.  Some are easier to change the time, while others, not so much. One of the two in our living room is a real pain to change. I think it’s “time” for a change!

Time for a Move

Each year we keep saying, “It’s time we downsize.”  While we love to work outside, it gets tougher every year. Whether it’s outside or inside, steps are a challenge.  Both Lorna and I have our health issues and ordinary tasks are not so easy anymore.
In my mind I can do projects, but in reality, who am I kidding?  We have a next door neighbor, Jim Putnam, who has been a real God send with both inside and outside work for us.
We’ve hired CurbAppeal in Carbon Cliff to do some major outside work. They do a good job. Anyway, I guess we’ll give it one more shot this year. Yeah, where have I heard that before?! I suppose the old saying, “God will’n and the Crick don’t rise,” fits for us!

 Income Tax

We got wacked good by the IRS Feds this year. As for our state tax we get a couple hundred back. We always get money back from the state.  We took a hit, like most everyone else, with the Stock Market. I never worry too much as its always a roller coaster ride with the market.

 PBS

We really like so many great programming offered by the Public Broadcasting System. There’s Nature, NOVA, Market to Market, and mysteries like Father Brown, Death in Paradise, Midsomer Murders, Antiques Roadshow, American Experience and the list goes on.
I am disappointed by the PBS News Hour. It used to news. In my opinion, they have moved way left, so I nix watching their bias reporting. Ha! That’s why we have remotes, right?

Do Ducks Eat Worms? - By Dan Dauw

By Dan Dauw
Geneseo Current

Flew the Coup

I’m trying to figure out just why the disappearance of birds at our feeders. Is it because they can find food more easily now with no snow and the advent of spring?  Could it be the birds have found their mates and are busy building nests, or the bird virus it taking its toll on our local bird population?
I miss asking Glen Anderson (now deceased) on questions concerning our feathered friends. He was the expert.
This morning, as I type this, a northern flicker paid us a visit. I had not seen one since one time during the winter. The U.S. Agriculture Dept. has said that more than 12,000 individual birds recently tested positive with the virus.  That number of dead birds is not in those numbers as dead birds were not in the count. Northern cardinals and other kinds of birds like to visit bird feeders, but they can become infected and die. Bald eagles can become infected by eating infected dead animals.
Ducks, like mallards, can shed the virus in their feces or saliva which infects other birds or mammals. So far, the experts say that feeders are somewhat safe, but should be cleaned regularly.  The risk of the bird flu virus spreading to people from bird feeders is very low.

2)     Which is faster, a boat traveling at 10 knots or one
travelling at 11 mph?
3)     Which common fish is sometimes called a bowfin or flake?
4)     What is a calm part of water on a river called?
5)     What is ‘Tenk fishing?

 Yeah, right!

The 10 most popular sports in the world are? 1) Football (soccer),
2) Cricket, 3) Hockey, 4) Tennis, 5) Volleyball, 6) Table Tennis, 7) Basketball,8) Rugby, 9) Boxing, and 10) Horse Racing & Equestrian. So, ‘yer going totell me more people participate in Rugby, Boxing or Table Tennis than Fishing?

Ikes Fish Fry

Make sure you circle April 12th on ‘your family calendar or iphone. That is the date of the Geneseo Izaak Walton League “Spring Fish Fry.”
If you like walleye, sauger, bluegill, crappie and catfish, you’d better show up for quite a feast. Fish and all the trimmings will be served in the Ike’s Lodge, Ikes Park, 1 mile north of Geneseo, off Rt. 82.
The event starts at 6 p.m. for all members and guests.  Bring a dish or two to share. It’s all free and believe me, it is “sooooo” good!

Tom Simpson, Colona, caught these nice crappies last week at a private lake.  He also caught some big bass, but let them go.

 Got a Double

I haven’t caught a “double” in a long time. Ha! I have a hard time catching a “single” let alone two. A “double” is when you’re fishing with two hooks on the end of your line. It happened last week when I caught two nice crappies on the same line.

 When I wasn’t Old

This happened a long time ago and I probably shouldn’t bring it up, but maybe it will save some other “guy” an embarrassment. I had a small duck that a friend gave me. I decided to take a bath and I thought Mr. Duck would enjoy the bathtub, too!  Well, I’m not quite sure how to say this, but I don’t know if it was hungry or mad, but it bit me and it held on for a few seconds. Moral of the story is, guys, “do not take a bath with a duck!”

Oh, and yes, ducks have teeth, or at least that duck did.

 Quiz Answers

1)Go downstream. 2) 10 knots (11.51 mph). 3) Dogfish. 4) An Eddy.

Just 5 Paragraphs - By Dan Dauw

Before you Check Out

I realize most of us don’t really want to talk about our ending, but it would be one less problem for your spouse and children in dealing with the obituary.
I had an uncle that wrote out his OB and I thought that might be a helpful task to do before I go to the great beyond. I tried to keep it short with just 5 paragraphs. I have heard that it is expensive to have one’s obituary in the local newspaper.  Instead, maybe I could just mail my OB to all my friends. Five or six should do it.

 It’s a Bird, it’s a Plane, it’s?

I sent the following “happening” to some friends who know I’m not completely “off center.” Last Saturday, in the afternoon, I sat outside on our upper deck watching the birds at our feeders.  The sky was cloudless with calm winds.
I happened to look up in the sky and saw a mature bald eagle.  That’s not real unusual as we’ve seen eagles before in our area.  However, this time was different.
All of a sudden, a very bright object and about 1/3rd the size of an eagle, appeared out of nowhere and seemed to go after the eagle.  Well, Mr. Eagle took after the “thing” and grabbed it in mid-air. In a second or two it released the thing.
Then it just vanished. Then entered another eagle that came on the scene and no, we are not talking about turkey vultures. With their white heads and tails, they were mature, for sure! What I cannot understand how this “thing” could vanish.
Was it a drone? I have never seen a drone in flight.  Still, how could it disappear, off and on?  I did not hear the thing make any noise, but then I didn’t have my hearing aids in either.
When the eagle grabbed the thing wouldn’t that harm the drone, or even the bird?  I guess I will never know what I witnessed on that Saturday afternoon, but one thing is for sure, it was mighty weird.

When I Wasn’t Old

I remember, when in grade school, that we shot free throws underhanded. That was the norm. I don’t remember seeing that in high school. When I was a kid I remember flying kites. We flew them just west of Stephan’s Park. No cell phones or electronic devices. Outdoors was the name of the game!
Any of you remember the Royal American Shows? It was held in
Davenport along the river. A train brought all the tents, and other circus gear. We went to the RAS every time it was in town. It was lots of fun.
I loved reading comic books. I remember we had milk delivered to our house in Moline from Baker’s Dairy. The milkman put the milk in an insulated box on our porch.
One time we heard on WHBF radio that there was a car in the Rock River. We were not far from the bridge going into Milan so a buddy and I went to the accident. I won’t say the name of the lady who was in the car. When the wrecker pulled the car out of the water, she fell through the broken windshield. I won’t go through the details, but I remember it to this day. Not a pretty sight.

Basketball

There sure has been a lot of good men and women basketball games these past several weeks.  I wish Iowa State men and women teams could have gone a bit further.  Their men’s team played horrible their last game.  Nothing seemed to work in their favor.
My favorite, Notre Dame women’s team, was great to watch. My all-time favorite is Hannah Hidalgo. They are really going to miss seniors, Sonia Citron and Maddy Westbeld.  I think freshman, Kate Koval, needs to improve. Coach Niele Ivey is an awesome coach. I have to laugh as sometimes she dresses like she is going to some ball. That’s just fine, she’s a pretty lady. “Go, Irish!”

The Moon is Like My Dentures - By Dan Dauw

Illinois Spring Trout Season

It opens on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 5 a.m. (Hennepin Canal Parkway opens at 6 a.m.) While the ‘Parkway at Sheffield and Moline’s Prospect Lagoon are closer to drive, we like the Centennial Park Pond in Rock Falls, IL. It’s not quite as crowed and the ground is more level.
Make sure besides your fishing license that you have also purchased the $6.00 trout stamp. You are allowed a limit of 5 trout.  You can purchase an Illinois fishing license and trout stamp at E-Z ‘Livin Sports Center, 231 – 1st Ave West, Milan, IL.

 Illinois Outdoor News

This is an interesting outdoor newspaper that contains a lot of hunting, trapping and fishing information about our great state of Illinois. In the recent March 7th issue there was an article by editor, Ralph Loos, on raising the cost of Illinois fishing licenses.
For some years now, I’ve wondered about that very thing?  The IL-DNR does a pretty good job considering all the various aspects of what that department is responsible for. Maybe it’s not that easy to increase the license fee, but I would think raising the fee by a buck or two is hardly catastrophic.

 More Deer

So far this year we’ve seen an increase in deer in our backyard and woods. One day our neighbors had 5 in their yard and two in ours.
We had a large doe a few days ago and lots of deer tracks. I set-up a trail camera at night and besides a deer it showed all kinds of creatures. One animal we don’t see much of anymore are rabbits.  Maybe coyotes and/or red-tailed hawks are responsible.
I miss deer hunting, but my health and age works against me. However, I am “not” giving up on fishing. Only until I’m 6 feet under the grass shall I not cast my twister tail.

 Basketball

Geeez, I think I’ve spent more time in front of the TV watching men and women’s college basketball.
We’re fans of Iowa State, Illinois and Illinois State. We have a grandson who attends Unv. of Nebraska so “Go, Big Red!”  The Notre Dame women’s team was really great to watch, but they kind of fell apart towards the end of the season.  They should win their first round in the NCAA tournament. I’m glad we have a good selection of favorites in the tournament.

Brights Off or On

With today’s modern vehicle headlights, night driving can be a challenge when approaching on-coming vehicles in the other lane. It seems to me some headlights have a yellow tint to them while others are brightly clear.
It almost looks like headlights have become more brighter even though the brights are not on.  I know sometimes I don’t have my brights on, but the other vehicle thinks I do.  I’m wondering if car manufactures should tone down their headlights a tad.

Just Punt! - By Dan Dauw

Running Deer in Olympics

I came across an interesting article about an Olympic sport back in 1908 and 1920. It is about the “sport?” of shooting running deer.
The story is actually about Oscar Swahn, a Swedish shooter at age 60, who participated in the London Olympics in 1908. He won two gold medals and a bronze. Then in 1920, at age 72, he won a silver medal in the double-shot running deer competition.
He still is the oldest gold medalist in the Olympics.  Let’s hope the “deer” was a paper target or stuffed deer and not a live one!

 Mild Winter

Well, okay, winter is not quite finished with us yet, but March 20th is not far away.  I think our nice neighbor used his snow-blower and leaf-blower three times on our driveway.  It seemed the heavy snow storms went either north or south of us. Whatever, thanks Mother Nature for a mild and fast winter.

That Midwest Mom

You will find her on Facebook and she is hilarious.  She gives cooking lessons, but pokes fun at what ingredients might work or just “punt!”
She is a Minnesota gal and sometimes brings on her funny accent. Like, “Yeah, sure; yeah  betcha!”
One time she sang a song and “wow,” talk about a beautiful operatic voice! She is the real deal. Check her out!

 April Hummers

The little hummingbirds might just make it up to our neck-of-woods by next month. Make sure to clean your feeder both inside and outside every so often.
Yellow bee guards are nice to have on the feeder. Although sometimes even those can be overwhelmed by so many bees.

Birds on the Decline

According to scientists, 2.9 billion birds are gone since 1970. Birds, except waterfowl, have been on a steady decline.  Loss of habitat is one of the problems.
We feed birds throughout the year, but I can’t say either way that there are more or less birds. Baltimore Orioles don’t stick around very long, but our neighbors have better luck. Grape jelly and oranges are what they like, but it’s rare when we see one at our “BO” feeder.
We did have a new winter visitor at our feeder. It was a northern flicker. Beautiful bird.  He and two red-breasted woodpeckers trade off their time chowing down on the suet cakes.

 Lookout WW2 Japanese Dogs

Towards the end of WW2 the population of the Japanese species of dog, Akitas, had become almost extinction with only 16 dogs left.
In 1944, Japanese people were killing their Akitas and selling the pelts to Japanese soldiers for warmth plus also as a food source.

Ice Fish’n

I put away the hard water fishing gear until next winter.  Too dangerous from here on. We only got out on the ice four or five times.  Lorna and I fished the main lake at Giant Goose, east of Atkinson. Twice we had some success with bluegills.

Fishing License Due

Your 2024 Illinois fishing license expires March 31, 2025. If you enjoy trout fishing your Inland Trout Stamp also needs to be renewed.
You can purchase your license, live bait, and fishing gear at E-Z Livin’ Sports Center, 231 1st Ave, Milan, IL.  Their phone number is: (309) 787-2244.  They open Mondays – Fridays at 7 a.m. – 9 p.m. On Saturdays 6 a.m.  – 9 p.m., Sundays 6 a.m. – 8 p.m

Geneseo Izaak Walton League

The next members and guests meeting will be held on Monday, March 10, 2025, at 7 p.m. in the Ikes Lodge, 1 mile north on Route 82.  The guest speaker will be Steve Kastorff, retired teacher, author and historian. His program is entitled, “Geneseo Fish Hatchery.” Refreshments served.

 Tattoos

For hundreds of years, many sailors have held the cultural tradition of tattooing themselves.  I never got into it myself, but I had some Navy buddies that had tattoos.
The funniest one I ever saw was a buddy who had two anchors (called screws) tattooed on his butt. I had another friend who had his girlfriend’s picture on his right arm.  What we thought funny is she broke up with him. He went through a painful time getting it erased.
Here are a few listed images used as tattoos by Navy sailors and their meaning. 1) Octopus (means Navy diver), 2) Rose (a lover left at home), 3) Polar Bear (sailed the Arctic Circle), 4) Shellback Turtle (Crossed the equator), 5) Rope (Deckhand and done on left wrist).

When I wasn’t Old

I was about 19 of age or there abouts when a friend of my dad’s stopped at our house. The man was a former German soldier in WW2.  On a wall we had a WW2 German rifle.  I remember he took the rifle off the wall and said, “Ah, you have a Mauser rifle. I had one of these. It served me well.”  I wished I’d asked him more about his time as an enemy soldier. Maybe better I didn’t!
2) Whenever I needed new shoes my mother would take me to a shoe place. I would then step up on a big wooden box and have my feet x-rayed. It showed the bones in my feet. Years later it was found that medically, it was not a good idea.
3)  One time, as a kid, I found a clip that held some cartridges. I went to my dad’s work bench and hit the clip with a hammer. “BANG!” Boy, was I lucky as the cartridges were blanks. It was stupid and I got in trouble on that one.
4) When I was young in the 1950s I went to the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds in Davenport with a friend and his dad. I remember seeing one of the Mer-Benz cars belonging to Adolf Hitler. It was long, black and instead of just two wheels in the rear, it had 4.  Funny how some things just stick in ‘yer mind!
5) Remember when clothes needed to be dried out on clothes lines? My mom had an umbrella type contraption that turned in the ground. She put clothes pins in the garments to dry.  I wonder what she did in the winter time?

USPS

It’s getting harder and harder to stick-up for my old Altemeyer. I sure hear lots of complaints.  Personally, we get good service from our letter carrier, Jan, but forget about “next day service” to and from zip codes 527, 528 and 612..!
I get diabetes medication through the mail and that sometimes can be a problem. Otherwise, being retired, I can wait on most things.  I did see on TV that President Trump said he wants to take a look at the USPS for possible changes.  There certainly is room at the “Peach Palace” (Headquarters) for improvements.
I have two of my former bosses who receive this column and I’m sure they would agree. Changes are needed.  Stay tuned!!!

Humorous and True

1)    In Italy, you eat spaghetti with a fork only. Using a spoon is considered uncouth.

2)     It is considered improper and impolite to use silverware to eat chicken in Turkey. What about when eating turkey???

3)     Keep your right elbow off the table when eating in Chilie.  Maybe it’s okay if you have a bowl of chili.

Warren Hadley

He passed away on February 14, 2025. We knew Warren from when he was on the Geneseo school board. He was a very bright person and had a good sense of humor. He sure did a lot of good things in his lifetime. God bless his soul.

Outdoor Critters

Last week I pulled out of the Rock Island hospital’s parking lot only to have one big buck decides to slowly walk in front of my car. With lots of woods south of the hospital and not far from the Black Hawk State Park it is no wonder deer enjoy that area.
Ah, but I was not done seeing some wildlife. I got on JD Expressway heading east when to my right, in a bare cornfield, I saw at least a dozen or more wild turkeys.
Two weeks ago we had a red fox in our backyard and in that same time frame, we saw 7 deer, 5 in our neighbor’s yard and 2 in our backyard.

Feed the Birds

Farm & Fleet has got to love us. The other day I got $93.00 worth of different kinds of birdseed and suet cakes. That should last us until late March, early April.
Many times I just like sitting by the window and watch all the various species of birds. I especially like the red-bellied woodpeckers, hairy woodpeckers, northern flicker (just one) and 3 families of cardinals.
My favorite is the red-headed woodpecker, but I have only seen it once this winter. Of course, we get lots of different small birds, too.

Hold on Donald

I’m happy with just about everything Trump has done so far in his short time as president. However, I wouldn’t give one inch to Russia’s Putin when it comes to meeting with President Zelenskyy of the Ukraine.
If there are going to be any kind of negotiations, Zelenskyy should be involved. President Trump is correct having said that if there was a truce, thousands or millions of people would be saved. There is no simple answer, but it seems to me that Putin has far more reaching goals when it comes to other border countries.
Update: that press conference with Vance, Trump and Zelenskyy on Friday, February 28, 2025, went down in flames. Unfortunately, the only winner was Russia.

Just a Pint
Just a reminder, but if you can spare a pint of your blood it sure would help save a life. You could make an appointment at the Red Cross in Geneseo, or Impactlife in Moline. Your donation is most welcome.

Notre Dame Women’s Basketball

Ugh! They are in a downward tail spin. They were in first place until they met up with NC State and Florida State. Their last regular season game is at home against Louisville (double ugh).

Humor

2) When I was little, I didn’t care what I wore. I just went along with what my parents chose. When I look in old photo albums, I realize that they didn’t care either!

3) The bad news is, I accidentally took the wrong medication today. The good news is, I’m now protected from heartworms and fleas for the next three months.

The Birdman of Henry County - By Dan Dauw

With Sadness

We received a phone call from Janet Anderson on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, that her husband, Glen, had passed. That was a phone call that Lorna and I were sorry to have received.
Glen did so many good things while his 90 plus years on this earth. He was a former board member of the Geneseo Izaak Walton League and was recognized for his work with the league. I know he was also a volunteer for the Geneseo High School football program and the Hammond-Henry hospital.
He was a strong advocate on conservation of our lands and waters. He gave many lectures to various groups on the importance of saving our native prairies and woodlands.
Glen was an expert concerning birds and built bluebird houses that were placed along the canal at the Ikes Park. I always called him, “The Birdman of Henry County.” He made sure to feed birds year round on his acreages. Our sympathies go out to Janet and family. God bless his soul.

Ironically

I was going to call Glen because we had a pair of cedar wax wings and one northern flicker at our bird feeders. I always let him know when we havean unusual bird to be seen. He had such a great amount of knowledge concerning our feathered friends.

Tony and Laura Petreikis, Illinois City, IL., both retired Conservation Police Officers, recently hopped on their snowmobile, but for joy riding, not looking for individuals who might warrant a citation.
In the photo it almost looked like two creatures from outer space. Even without all his garb, Tony is still scary looking!

Tony Petreikis caught these bluegills in a local pond.  Ha-Ha! At least that's what he said.

David Wyffels, Fish Biologist

He was the guest speaker at the February 10th meeting of the Geneseo Izaak Walton League. He covers several counties including Henry County.
His office is located in Sheffield and he works for the Illinois DNR. He checks water and fish conditions. He has a boat that is rigged up with shocking devices that can give him information on fish species counts.
The shocking does not harm the fish, but it provides enough time to analyze the health of fish and if stocking is needed. He answered a lot of questions and did an excellent job.
Next month, on March 10th, Steve Kastorff, retired teacher, author and lecturer, will provide a program on the Geneseo Fish Hatchery at 7 p.m. in the Ikes Lodge.

Pam Edwards & the Geneseo H.S. Choir

They presented a really nice Valentine Love Concert for the Geneseo Kiwanis “Guest Night” on February 11th. The boys ‘n girls choirs sang some songs after which they passed out music sheets so everyone could sing along.
The song selections were: You are My Sunshine, Let Me Call You Sweetheart, and Love Me Tender. Director Pam certainly picked the right songs for the older audience.
Great job, Pam Edwards and the Geneseo High School Choir. It made for a nice evening!

Poem for Glen Anderson

It was but a few days ago,
a trip to Heaven, he did go;

Over 90 plus years he spent on this sphere,
He taught many students from far and near;

Glen volunteered to help, whatever the day,
He would always refuse, any type of pay;

He fed the birds and watched them eat,
Looking out their window, it was all very neat!

So, in ending, peace be with his kind soul above,
On his shoulder may ride a white mourning dove.

Happy Valentine’s Day

Many folks know that Valentine’s Day is named after St. Valentine. The problem is, there were two St. Valentines. Nobody knows for sure if the holiday originated with St. Valentine in Rome, or the other one in Terni, Italy?
In the 1300s, Valentine’s Day officially became a holiday associated with love. It was believed that February 14 was the start of birds’ mating season. Birds and romance had a connection.
Lorna and I became engaged on Valentine’s Day in her classroom at the junior high school in Barstow, IL. On that special day we always celebrate at The Cellar.

Like Father Like Son

Dennie Howell recently got a nice buck with his bow ‘n arrow. Not to be outdone, his dad, Mitch Howell, Colona, got a deer with his shotgun during this past shotgun season. Mitch got his deer on an island on the Mississippi River. Looks like there will be plenty of venison dinners as the winter goes on.

A Matter of Taste

Okay, bats see with their ears, snakes smell with their tongue and butterflies’ taste through their feet. The female monarch butterfly can taste if a plant is okay for her larvae to eat.
However, the process is not perfect as sometimes she can be tricked into laying her eggs on an invasive plant species causing the larvae to die within a few days.

Yay, Pancakes and the Trimmings

Just a second reminder that the Geneseo Boy Scout Troop 100 will host their “Annual Boy Scout Pancake Breakfast” on Sunday, February 16, 2025, from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Geneseo Moose Lodge. It’s only 7 bucks per adult and kids age 5 & under, free! C-U there!!

Geneseo Museum History Restarts

This was good news. Steve Kastorff, retired teacher, author and lecturer, told me that the Geneseo Historical Museum will be host to various monthly history talks at the museum.
Angie Snook started the programs some years ago and the talks were based more on the Civil War. As time went on, the one hour lectures covered both local and world history events. Besides Angie, she brought in other local speakers to present history related programs.
I’m not sure when the new programs are going to start, but I’m sure the new curator will get the word out. While Angie is retired from her years as the museum’s curator, I’m sure she will continue on the lecture circuit. She is an amazing lady.

Rock Falls Firearm Frenzy

Ice Fishing Report

Last Tuesday morning Lorna and I tried our luck on the hard water. We fished the main lake at Giant Goose, Atkinson. There was about 9” of good ice.
We fished for about 2 hours and brought home 13 bluegills. We got some small “dinks” and let them go. Jigs and waxies are what the ‘gills wanted for breakfast.

Bait for Fishing

As most of you anglers know, Carbon Cliff Bait & Tackle is no longer in business. Living in Colona, it was just a “hop, skip ‘n a jump” for me to purchase bait, especially minnows, worms, waxies, etc. I was spoiled!
In Geneseo, you used to be able to get waxies and worms at Farm & Fleet. However, I have not seen their small refrigerator that contained waxies and worms for sale. So, long story short, that leaves two locations in which to get both bait and tackle. That is Porter’s Village Gas Station on Rt. 84 west, Hampton, IL., or E-Z Livin’ Sports Center, 231 1st Ave W., Milan, IL.
Porter’s is about 15 minutes closer to our home than E-Z Livin.’ E-Z Livin’ is a half-hour run from home, but they have a larger array of fishing equipment. The phone # for E-Z Livin’ is (309) 787-2244. The phone # for Porters is (309) 755-3862.

Geneseo DU Gun Bingo

“Bingo!” This event should be fun. The Geneseo Ducks Unlimited are hosting a “Gun Bingo” on Sunday, March 9, 2025. It will be held at The Black Ridge, 123 N. Prospect St., Cambridge, IL.
There will be guns, bingo, games, raffles, fun and auctions. Geeez, can they offer anything more? I think not!!!
The cost is $80 per person and while you might think that’s a bit steep, it includes entry, food, DU membership, 8 games of Bingo prize for each game is a gun or $400 bucks in cash. Food and soda will be provided – BYOB.
All this is limited to 100 individuals. Must be age 18 to play bingo. Doors will open at 11 a.m., Lunch at 11:30 a.m. Bingo at 1 p.m. Too bad they couldn’t add a dunking tank with Dale “Double Barrel” Doubler as the person falling in the tank. I mean, he’s all wet anyway!!!! If you need more information go to: www.geneseodu.org

Record 2024 Soybean Crop

According to a report from Tony McCombie, State Rep., Dist. 89, our Prairie State had a harvest soybean record crop of 688 million bushels. The Illinois Soybean Association reported Illinois farmers had harvested beans from 10.75 million acres of Illinois land.
It works out to a yield of about 64 bushels per acre. Illinois is one of the largest concentrations of food-related businesses in the world. Soybean products can also be used to make products such as soy-based biodiesel fuel.

Deer me, time for a Drink

One of my former and good USPS bosses, John B., sent me a couple of photos of some whitetails he recently had in his backyard. He said he doesn’t feed deer, but does have a heated fountain which offers water for deer and I suspect birds, too!

Deer & Walleye

Two bucks battle it out in John B's backyard.

For Christmas our daughter gave me a 1941 published booklet on the Illinois Game and Fish Regulations. It showed that deer hunting was illegal.
So, I looked it up on the computer when deer were allowed to be hunted in Illinois. It was not allowed until October 1-15, 1957, and bow & arrow only. Only 220 deer were harvested.
In 2023, Illinois deer hunters were allowed to use a single-shot rifle and only certain calibers allowed. Ha! So, leave your .22 at home!
An Illinois hunting license in 1941 was $1.50. An Illinois fishing license that same year was .75 cents. A few places in the booklet it mentioned certain fish species. It showed walleye spelled, “Wall-eyed Pike.” Walleye and northern pike are two different species.
I remember The Cellar used to list “walleye pike” on their menu. I pointed out the mistake to server “Cindy”, and she promptly hit me over the head with a bread roll. No matter how they spelled it, it sure tasted good!

Another buck seemed to say, "Guys, you can fight

January not so Bad

There are just a few days left of January weather, but overall, I think it was mild month. We missed some heavy snowfalls that went north and south of our area. Now, Mother Nature, if ‘yer reading this how about giving us February’s 28 days of above normal temps?! Just saying!

When I wasn’t Old

As a young teen I can remember when Moline’s river drive was, for the most part, kind of junky. Through the years the city fathers turned it into a really nice path and greenery setting from about 25th street to and including East Moline.
I can remember working a short time at the International Harvester plant. My dad was an accounting supervisor and got me a Job as a stock chaser. I was always dirty when I came home each day. I made good money at $2.33 an hour. My boss was known as “Red.” He was sort of a tough guy, but if you did your job, no problem.
Anyway, I got laid off, took the test for the Postal Service at $2.16 per hour. After 38 years later, I retired.
I remember there was and is a small factory on about 41st & 4th avenue in Moline that instead of having to cut their grass they had sheep to do the work. The building is still there today, but “Little Bo Peep’s sheep” are no where to be seen.
Way back when, I had a good friend, I’ll call him “J.A,” and we went hunting and fishing together. We were the same age and our parents were good friends. He came home one day after school and found his mother had committed suicide by cutting her wrists. That is a bad memory.
On a more pleasant note. John F. and I dated the same girl, Mary S. We would say she liked one of us better. Ha! She married a letter carrier. I still think she liked me better!!!

Geneseo Izaak Walton League

All members and guests are invited to next month’s February 10th meeting at the Ikes Lodge. The guest speaker is Dave Wyffels, Fish Biologist, IL-DNR. The program starts at 7 p.m. with refreshments to follow.

Hey, come back!

According to the 48th Annual National Movers Study, our state is second to the most folks leaving Illinois. The first is New Jersey at 66.94% with Illinois at 59.94%. New York is 3rd place at 59.01% and California at 57.97%.
Okay, then where are all the folks moving to? The number one state people are moving to is West Virginia (hear that Bob Mays), followed by Delaware (huh?) and South Carolina. The other two states are Washington, DC and North Carolina (there you go, Don & Barb). Alaska and Hawaii were not included in the study.

Girl Scout Cookies

Just a reminder, make sure to order your cookies from the Girl Scouts. We order ours through Audrey Scheider. The proceeds help the Girl Scouts in their various projects. The cost per box is $6.00. Some year they should come up “Carp-fish” cookies.

Ice Fishing Report

Geneseo's Brian Herron recently caught this crappie and several bluegills at Giant Goose Lake, Atkinson, IL.  Jeff Scheider and Lorna Dauw also caught fish.

Last Saturday, Lorna and I fished the private main lake at Giant Goose, Atkinson, IL. When we arrived so did members Brian Herron and Jeff Scheider.
The ice wasplenty thick at 9-10 inches. Everyone caught fish except one person who’s name is not important! The temperatures were not bad, but we could do without the wind. Still, we had a good time and I cleaned 5 fish when we got home. The guys felt sorry for me. Thus the 5 fish! We hope to try it again this week.

Cold legs for Owls

Many owls have long legs. The Great Horned Owl’s legs, for example, can account for half its body length. The reason we don’t notice its bare legs is because they are hidden by the bird’s fluffy body feathers. See what you can learn by reading this column! Not really!!!

Maple City Band

‘Tis a way’s away, but the kind maestro, Alan Kiser, recently gave us the MCB concerts dates for 2025.
They are as follows: June 3, June 10, June 17, July 4th (Friday), and the Maple City “German Band” on July 15. With the exception of July 4th, all concerts start at 7 p.m.
Each year the band has added more and more musicians. Let’s hope there is room for everyone on the stage. Maestro Kiser and the band will provide great music so make sure to check it out.

Ice Fishing Report

Lorna and I went ice fishing last Friday for a few hours. It was a warm day in the high 40s, maybe low ‘50s. Perfect day for ice fishing. The ice was plenty thick at 9 inches. Lorna helped me with the ice fishing gear and then went back to the SUV to read her book.
I fished a few hours and caught 10 bluegills and lost a few. Waxies worked, minnows did not. I fished the main lake at Giant Goose.

It was a "Dan D" outdoors last Friday to do some ice fishing. The fish were biting , too!

Go, Redbirds!

Last Saturday, the Nommensen and Dauw families traveled to Bloomington-Normal to watch the ISU “Red Birds” play Missouri State University.
The game was mostly favorited by MSU, but then with maybe 5-10 minutes to go, ISU “turned ‘n burned” with some much needed 3 pointers to win the game. As you can see in the photo it shows our motley crew cheering on ISU.

The Nommensen and Dauw family enjoyed a great basketball game between Illinois State University and Missouri State University.  ISU won!

Humor

A fella was fishing off the coast of Florida when his boat tipped over. He yelled at an old beachcomber on shore if there were any ‘gators around here? The old guy said, “Naw. They haven’t been around here in years.”
Feeling safe, the fisherman started swimming for shore. About halfway to shore he yelled, “How did you get rid of the ‘gators?” The old guy relied, “We didn’t do anything. The sharks got ‘em all.”

Do Fish Sleep? - By Dan Dauw

Awesome Challenge

Last week I was e-mailing with a friend, Tony Petreikis. He and his wife, Laura, were local Conservation Police Officers. They are retired and livening the good life in Wisconsin. They are big anglers and have set a goal of fishing in all 50 states. That includes fishing the great lakes which they have done so except for Lake Huron.
They have 22 states checked off. I know of another friend, Don Morrison, who lives in North Carolina and is working on playing golf in all 50 states. Knowing these fellows I think they will achieve their goals.

Do fish sleep?

I know a lot of you have wondered that for years. Well, the problem is fish have no eyelids so it’s hard to know if they are dozing off, or ready to take your bait when fishing.

When I wasn’t Old

Growing up on Fridays I think we mostly had fish sticks for supper. Ha! I guess we wouldn’t go to heaven if we ate meat. It’s kind of funny, but we still go out for dinner on a lot of Fridays.
In my opinion, “Sweet Peas” has great fish and Lorna likes their ribs. On special occasions, it’s a trip to “The Cellar.”
Another food I had in my younger days was chicken pot pies. I didn’t care for them as they had too many peas mixed in.
Way back when, I disliked peas, broccoli and beets. As one gets older tastes can change, but beets are still a “yuk” for me.
I remember we had a next-door neighbor that would leave her house and would always sing. It drove my mom nuts because she said no one’s that happy. Her husband built a boat “inside” their house. He had a mistake in his calculations and could not get it out of the house. He finally got his saw and somehow got it outside.
We had good neighbors although one fella was a newsman for a local TV station and he thought he was a pretty cool dude. He was kind of a jerk.
Growing up we went to Sunday mass at Sacred Heart Church, Moline. I always remember one time the Monsignor chastised some people for coming late to mass. I’ll bet they never came back after that! My mom never cared to go to church, but my dad did. Before I check-out I should go to that same church, just for old times sake.

Sports

Some great games over last weekend. Notre Dame beat Penn State in football and the ND women’s BB team won even though they were without their number one scorer, Hannah Hidalgo. Iowa State pulled out an overtime win beating Texas Tech in basketball. Let’s hope the Geneseo H.S. can do better in basketball. “Some days are diamonds, some days are stone.”

Feed the Birds

Just a reminder that our feathered friends enjoy eating seeds, suet, and water during these snow covered days. I felt sorry for one blackbird that comes to our feeders. It has a piece of string about five inches long that seems to be caught under its peak. It drives the poor bird nuts as it try’s everything to get free from the pesky thing.

Humor

  1. “I’m making a documentary on how to fly a plane. We’re currently filming the pilot.”

  2. When you wear a belt of $100 bills, it’s just a “waist” of money.

  3. Lorna asked if I’ve seen the dog bowl? I said I never knew he did.

  4. Whoever stole the copy of my Microsoft office, I will find you. You have my word.

  5. A friend of mine said he only believes in 12.5% of the Bible. I guess that makes him an “1/8th”iest. (Note: As I am typing this, coyotes are in our backyard).

The Best Dam Show - By Dan Dauw

By Dan Dauw
Geneseo Current

2025

It sure didn’t start very good with the New Year’s massacre at New Orleans. Just plain senseless. I hope I’m wrong, but let’s pray there are no copy cats out there willing to kill innocent people for some stupid cause.

Go, Bears & Others

Last weekend I was happy to see my favorite sport teams come away with wins. My “Super Bowl” was ‘da Bears beating the Packers. Great game!
So was the Notre Dame women’s basketball team beating North Carolina. They are so awesome. Other fun-to-watch teams were Illinois, Nebraska and Iowa State. All winners in either football or basketball.

Hornpipe Dance

I like to watch military parade marching bands from all over the globe. One that I recently found on the internet was from India. You will see an India Navy band marching and when it stops, about 75 young lady India Sea Cadets do a really neat and nautical performance. I forwarded the video to friend, Tony Petreikis, and he hit the nail-on-the-head.
The music was like that of the old Popeye cartoons. The ladies mimicked many Navy nautical moves like swabbing the decks, etc. Check it out by typing the following: The Hornpipe Dance by Sea Cadets of the Indian Navy 2024 (or 2023, it’s the same routine).

Garrett Petreikis, son of Tony Petreikis, retired local Game Warden, recently caught this northern pike in a Wisconsin lake.

Speaking of India

One of the foreign students we hosted during the recent Thanksgiving holidays was from India and attending the University of Chicago. She is Mrs. Vartika Singh, 38. She was one very bright young lady. I enjoyed teasing her and she would match my joking. I told her I should say prayers for her poor husband! Anyway, it was nice having her stay with us and also learning more about India.

When I wasn’t Old

When I was a teen, I worked summers pumping gas for pleasure boats at the Rock Island Boat Club. One time I had forgotten my gasoline pump keys. I drove my motor bike (Mo-ped) in a big hurry to get the keys. I switched lanes and a big old Buick hit me from behind. Back then, helmets were rare to be seen. Fortunately, I wasn’t hurt badly and the guy took off.
My poor Mo-ped actually made it home so I got the pump keys and made it back to work. I was very lucky!
You would not believe the drunks that came to the dock. Sometimes they would come in way to fast and scratch the side of their boat. One time a guy fell when he hit the dock. He was so plastered.

Switching gears, remember guys our haircuts back then? The crewcut, mohawk, and flattop were popular. I always got a crewcut at Arnie’s (Anderson) Barber Shop, 2300 block of 5th Avenue in Moline. One time I had a crush on a gal that worked at the LeClaire Hotel in Moline.
I was a substitute letter carrier and the hotel had a mail chute. I had to go inside and empty the mail from the chute. One time I was in a hurry and somehow broke the glass on the inside door. I didn’t get in any trouble. However, one winter I hit a car with my postal vehicle. It was a very minor accident, but I did get my wrists slapped! That was 1961. Oh, one more thing. When I had a mail route in Moline I had to deliver mail in the 5th Avenue Building. I can’t remember exactly how many floors, but I would drop off #3 postal sacks full of mail on various floors as I went to the top floor. Now just think, that would never fly today. It would be so easy to steal mail from the sacks.
The building also had mail chutes and they would often jam from someone pushing bundles of letters in the narrow chutes. Long ago, Moline Postmaster, Wally Babl, and I would have lunch together. Often a waitress, when we were leaving would say, “Thank you, and have a nice day!” Wally would say, “No thank you, I have other plans!” He was funny.

Humor

Don Morrison, North Carolina, is quite the bird guy. A few days ago his obese parrot died. It was a huge weight off his shoulders.

Dale Dobbler, Cambridge, got another deer. Yeah, like he needs another deer head on the wall. Pretty soon he’ll have them mounted on the “outside” of his home. He told me the other day he should invent a beer called, “Occasionally.” So, when asked, Dale can say “I drink occasionally.”

Dale Collis, Galva, went to his doctor. The doctor said, “You have the “Peak A Boo” virus. So, he sent Dale straight to the ICU.

Dale Kiser, Geneseo, recently saw a documentary on beavers. He said it was the best dam show he’d ever seen.
