Communication
A few months ago I read an interesting article in the Iowa Farmer Today about communication or the lack of. The article was by Dr. Val Farmer (Yes, that’s his real last name) mentions that when communicating and understanding good questions it is important plus listening from the other person.
He goes on to say that research has shown that body language is believed 55% of the time, tone of voice is believed 35% of the time and content only 8% when there is a discrepancy between the non-verbal and verbal communication.
There is something to be said concerning “body language” when you are speaking visually to a person. I know for myself, I sometimes just block out information from the speaker because it just is not interesting. It’s rude on my part, but it happens sometimes.
Weather & Ice Fishing
1) South and west winds are good for fishing. 2) Stable conditions are also good for fishing. 3) Panfish bite better on cloudy days then bright, sunny days. 4) Heavy snowstorms can cause panfish to hide in cover and go in deeper water. 5) Pay attention to the barometer. Some experts believe fishing can be better with the rise and/or fall of the barometer.
Iwo Jima, February, 1945
This Japanese island was important to Japan for communication plus it had 3 runways. The island is about 800 miles from the mainland. For 70 days the Island was bombed by the Army Air Force and 3 days by Navy shelling.
About 23,000 Japanese soldiers were on the island. On February 19, 1945, the U.S. Marines hit the beach head. They paid a horrible price. More that 6,800 U.S. servicemen died and 19,000 wounded. On February 25, they raised the American flag on top of Mount Suribachi, but the fighting had just begun.
Feed the Birds
As I type this we have a tad over 10 inches of the white stuff covering the frozen ground. It makes it tough for not just birds, but other wildlife, too! We feed the birds and it’s been a chore keeping up with filling the bird feeders. They love the suet cakes, but they aren’t cheap.

Because of health reasons this February issue will be my last for both “Sure Shots” and “Outdoors and More.” I very much enjoyed the ride and a sincere “Thank You” to Ann Littleson for her helpfulness. I will still do “Dan D Outdoors.”
