Eye Sore? - By Dan Dauw

MCB June 6th Concert

Maestro Alan Kiser and the mighty Geneseo Maple City Band will present their first concert of the season on June 6th. It starts at 7 p.m. in the park’s bandshell. I saw a list of the tentative music selections and it is going to be really, really good! Also, don’t forget to support the organization hosting the ice cream social under the pavilion. Hope to see you there!

 D-Day June 6th

It was on that day in 1944, that our troops, along with the Brits, Canadians, and other countries hit the beaches of Normandy, France.  The Nazis were well dug in and it was a slaughter in many cases. Here is something the late Charles Palmgren and I always wondered about. You’ve probably seen the same black & white actual footage of some soldiers staggering out of the water on to the beach. One was shot right away. It is always shown in documentaries and so on.  Charlie and I always wondered just who was that poor fellow? There was another soldier who appeared wounded behind him. I guess no one will ever know their names, but only to God.

 RIA Museum

After 3 plus years the grand reopening of the Rock Island Arsenal Museum will be held on Thursday, June 29, 2023. For this special event the hours will be from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The address is: 1 Rock Island Arsenal, Bldg 60 – 3500 North Ave, Rock Island, IL. I hope I’m wrong, but I think I read or heard that the display walls of various firearms has been mostly eliminated. Still, I’m sure it is worth the drive to check it out. Oh, and because of the special event, you only need to show your driver’s license at the gate.

    DVV Addition

I think our small Dayton Valley View addition in Colona have very nice and friendly people. We’ve lived in our home since 1977 and we have never regretted moving here. My health is not what it used to be, but the gas tank isn’t empty just yet. The neighbors have been extremely helpful, especially Jim & Jeanne Putnam. Jim has helped in so many ways by helping us with outside work. I suspect moving to a downsized place is not far away, but we keep saying, “One more year!”

 Eye Sore?

While I don’t live in Geneseo, to me it always has and still is, a very clean town. I think one location that looks run down is coming into town on Rt. 82. It’s across from the cemetery. Okay, maybe not a big deal!

 Corn Looks Good

Driving recently down to St. Louis and skipping I-55, we saw a lot of farm land. So many of the fields starting to look green from the small corn & bean plants. Let’s hope Mother Nature dishes out needed moisture as the growing season progresses.

 Farm Bill

It seems this farm bill is taking forever to materialize. Both legislators and lobbyists have to tackle a host of issues so that is understandable. They say the farm bill will be the biggest yet to the tune of over $1 trillion big ones! It appears crop insurance is a sticky point with some legislators. Another is the debt ceiling and so on. Let’s just hope there will be more pluses in the bill for our farmers.

 Ticks

A reminder, ticks can be a serious problem to us humans. I read that Alpha-gal syndrome is one of many dangers from a tick bite. It is an allergic reaction to the bite and is not a good thing. Make sure if you’ve been outdoors in wooded or tall, grassy areas, check yourself afterwards for the nasty critters.

 Humor

Doctors say our metabolism slows down as we age. Mine didn’t just slow down. It pulled over and parked. Lyn Paris isn’t saying how seasick he gets, but his last cruise, they didn’t assign him a cabin, but instead a railing! Think you had the last word? Well, guess what? I had my hearing aid turned off. For us older folks the following “do not” go together: 1) A nose ring and bifocals. 2) A pierced tongue and dentures. 3) A spiked hair and bald spots.
