Geneseo Ikes Senior Fishing Derby
Well, last Saturday the Geneseo Izaak Walton League had their annual “Youth Fishing Derby” which was a lot fun. Well, let’s not leave our seniors without having some fishing fun! The Geneseo Ikes will host their “Senior Fishing Derby” on Saturday, June 17, 2023, from 8:00 to 10:30 a.m. Prizes awarded for the biggest bass (It must be over 14”), most fish, and biggest bullhead. Free bait courtesy of Carbon Cliff Bait & Tackle. Lorna and I will start taking reservations starting at 8.m. The nice thing about the Saturday date is it falls in the “Illinois Free Fishing Days.” You don’t need a fishing license. However, all IL-DNR fishing regulations do apply. So, bring your lawn chair, a cold drink and enjoy a few hours of fish’n! You might just win a nice prize, too!
Free Fishing Days
Every year the Illinois DNR allows free fishing in Illinois waters. This year the dates are June 16 through June 19, 2023. Keep in mind that all DNR regulations must be met, but you won’t need a fishing license for those 4 days.
RIA Museum Reopening
The Grand Reopening of the Rock Island Arsenal Museum will be held on Thursday, June 29, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. Because it is a special event I was told you only need to show your driver’s license at the entrance gate. If you attend the ceremonies the dress code for military is Duty Uniform (Yeah, like I could fit in my old uniform!) As for we now civilians, the dress code is business casual. If questions call 309-782-6347.
MCB June 20th Concert
The Geneseo Maple City Band will perform their 3rd outdoor concert at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20, 2023. It will be held in the City Park. The Geneseo Izaak Walton League will host the ice cream social.
Flowers for Supper
Those and a host of other items Alvin and his fellow chipmunks enjoy eating. They are cute little guys, but do wish they would leave our plants alone. They have quite an appetite for seeds, nuts, insects, worms, bird eggs and just about everything in between. On the flip side, they themselves are dinner for owls, bobcats, foxes, and other creatures. The squirrels can’t wear a halo over their head either! They enjoy jumping in potted plants and dig for a snack or two. I guess it’s just Mother Nature’s fur ‘n feather friends doing their own thing. Gardening tip: Lorna’s sister said she springles ground cinnamon on the base of her flowers and it keeps Alvin and his buddies at bay. We will see how that works.
Miracle Bluegrass & Gospel Band
If I said it once, I’ll say it again! This local group of musicians and singers are really good. We went to their concert in the park last Thursday, June 8th. I especially liked “Going Home” by Lyn Paris. Great job, ladies ‘n gentlemen!
Lawn Mowers
Geez, have they come a long way since the rotary push mower. My old Toro finally went kaput so I made a trip to Geneseo’s B & B Lawn EQT & Cyclery. The one I purchased had some nice bells ‘n whistles like self-propelled and electric self-starting. This one should last me until I’m 6 feet “under” the grass!
Senior Humor
Movies for seniors: “The Sound of Snoring,” “Dancing with Bunions“ and “Gone with the Toupee.” RV Poem: “Driving across America, seeing all she has to give, my REV rolls from state to state, ‘cause I’ve forgotten where I live.” Former airline pilot, Jerry Myhre, once announced to the passengers, “While there have recently been some near in-flight misses we want to assure you that our airline policy is not to tailgate.” Tony Simon, another local pilot, once had a very rough landing and just hammered the runway. When I departed the aircraft I poked my head in the cockpit and asked Captain Simon, “Did we land or were we shot down?”

These awesome young anglers won fishing awards in their respective age brackets. There was an attendance record of 126 kids. A free luncheon was provided for all plus many nice door prizes given away.
