Hunting Season
If you are new at hunting in Illinois make sure you pick up a copy of the “Illinois Digest of Hunting and Trapping Regulations, 2023-2024.” You can get a free copy at Carbon Cliff Bait & Tackle. Even if ‘yer an old bird like myself, regulations can change and it is up to you to know what those are! I sure am going to miss those nice folks at Carbon Cliff Bait & Tackle, but after many years they are closing shop this December. Geez, the gang at Cantrell’s Towing moved, East Moline Feed & Pet Supplies (Kevin Versluis) retired, (new place is Curb Appeal) and soon CC Bait & Tackle. All nice folks and nice memories!
Jokes
A veterinarian and taxidermist went into business together. A sign outside their business read, “Either Way, You Get Your Pet Back.” A frog telephones a psychic hotline and is told, “You are gong to meet a beautiful young girl who will want to know everything about you.” “Great,” says the frog. “Will I meet her at a party?” “No,” said the psychic, “Next year…..in biology class.” Scott Thurman is such a bad driver the police gave him a season ticket.
The Buffalo
I wonder if you saw on Iowa PBS the documentary, The Buffalo by Ken Burns? I think they only used the word, Bison, once or twice and to be accurate, that word is more correct. However, I think most people call the big beast, Buffalo! Okay, now that I got that out of the way, we have a freezer door lined with packages of buffalo ground meat. It is sold at the CSI Homes office in Cambridge on Mondays thru Fridays. They have gone up a tad in price from $7.50 to $8.00, but if sure tastes good and is healthy (less fat). They also sell buffalo boneless roasts, ribs, etc.
‘da Bears
Yes, they did look good against a poor looking Raider team. With QB Fields out with a bad thumb, backup QB Bagent was impressive. Ha!, We’ve been down that road a zillion times so let’s see how he does against good team! I’m not ready to throw Fields under the bus just yet. Maybe, just maybe, one of the two will become, “The Man!!!

Because he had something on the other line.
5. I got one of those robo calls saying I won $10,000 from a fishing show. - I know there was a big catch involved somewhere!!!
Gavie & Henry County
This isn’t about Geneseo, but it is interesting about a town south of Geneseo. Gavie is a seaport in Sweden. So, when the Swedes came over here to build a town in Henry County they came up with the 3rd largest seaport in Sweden.. They used the spelling Gavie, which eventually became Galva. Here are a few 1861 village ordinances which are kind of funny. 1) You are not allowed to tie your horse or mule or oxen to any tree. 2)You are not allowed to drive your buggy on the sidewalks under a penalty of a fine not more than $20.00. 3) You had to pay 50 cents per year for each dog you owned. 4) No gambling for money. If found out, the police magistrate would destroy such gambling devices. It appears you could gamble if you were one half mile from the town.
Henry County was the first county in Illinois to take up the matter of good roads and started improvement in 1906. 5) Not an ordinance, but in September, 1922, the Chicago White Sox played the Galva’s “All Star Team.” Galva lost 10 to 6.
There are artifacts of that baseball team at the Henry County Historical Museum. Bishop Hill, IL. Coal mining was a big industry in Henry County. It stared around 1857, but by 1910 the industry had pretty much all gone up in smoke, so to speak! Coal was still mined in later years, but not as much as in the early days. This information is from a booklet I read by Sally Nelson. There really is a lot of interesting history about Henry County if one wants to dig deep enough.
Trout Report
I ended my fall trout fishing last Saturday. We had eaten so much trout a “rainbow” ends at our house. With the exception of the second day of the fall season (Lorna and I just caught 5) I was lucky to have caught 5 trout each morning for the rest of the week. Speaking for myself, minnows are “the” bait to use. Every angler has their favorite trout bait and the “large” size minnows are a real turn on! Use a lighted bobber (before the sun comes up), attach a split shot about 2 inches above a #6 crappie hook. Distance from bobber to hook, about 15 inches. I’m not a Pro, but I know what works, or at least for me!
