Take it to the Horsepital! - By Dan Dauw

Hot August

It sure was! Our tomato plants really enjoyed the hot weather. We have sandy soil so we had to water about every two weeks, but the end result was a good crop. Our many flowers needed more watering, but we don’t water our lawn. Not cutting the grass to short sure helps a healthy lawn. I did less fishing during the high 80’s and 90’s. Hopefully in September I can enjoy the Mississippi River catching channel cats. Someone needs to show Tom Simpson and Gary Dahlquist how to catch “whiskers.” Gary’s last catch was a snapping turtle which he hooked on its foot.

Hot Debates

Last week’s Republican debate for the big job was a little heated. I’d rather hear what they would do differently rather than pick on each other. If I had to pick one candidate that impressed me the most it was Nikki Haley. I voted for Trump the last time, but I just can’t take him or Biden. Ugh!! Because of my age I doubt I’ll be around to see he or she’s completed four-year term. As to my winning votes of the past, I have only been around 50% accurate so not much help for me there.

Kiwanis Steak Cookout

This is always a nice annual event which was held on Tuesday, Aug 22, in the Geneseo pavilion. The fellows who stood over the hot grills cooking steaks deserve a round of applause. It was a hot evening. Kiwanis member, Dale Kiser, was awarded the Luis V. Amador Medallion Award for his outstanding service within the community. He deserved the award as Dale is an amazing volunteer and nice guy. I believe he holds the record for the demise of moles, but that wasn’t mentioned in the award. The guest speaker for the evening was Larry Johnsen, Geneseo H.S. football coach. He talked about the upcoming football season. I hope they have a winning season, but remember, “Some years are gold ‘n some years are stone!” Another guest speaker was the Art teacher at GHS, Kim Windisch Vandersnick. Last year she painted a very large “GHS” football that was built by Kiwanis member, Gene Stees.

Farm Humor

Alan & Karen Lyman lost one of their cows. Al finally “tractor” down! In school, Karen would always get the highest marks in math exams. She used “pro-tractors.” When the Lyman’s had horses, if one would get sick they would take it to the “horsepital.” Gene Stees used to raise cattle. He told me once that he overheard a mother cow say to her calf, “It is pasture bedtime, Dairy!” Another thing he told me was a cow without a calf is called, “De-calf-eineted.” I wonder if he’s telling me the truth? Why did the cows return to the Marijuana field? It was the pot calling the cattle back. Local farmer, Keith “Gunslinger” Vandewoestyne, was on his computer when he slipped and pushed his head trough the computer screen. I was there when it happened so I dialed 9-1-1. to report a “Farmer in the Dell.” Happy Birthday to Gunslinger. He had a birthday party last week. He looks pretty good for 99!!!! I knew one farmer who was cruel. He would pull corn by the ears. Okay, enough of my corny jokes!!!!

Old Papers

Glen and Jan Anderson, Geneseo, were cleaning out some old things at their place and gave me some local Dispatch newspapers from 1942-45. Of course, much of it was about the war. As an old Moliner, I read in the February 1, 1945 paper that the Moline, IL., Rotary Club sponsored the “SS Moline,” a 10,800-ton Victory ship. The ship was the 654th vessel built at the Kaiser Company. Mrs. Otto Schweinberger, wife of the president of the Rotary Club, christened the ship with a bottle of champagne. I would have liked to seen that, but at 3 years old I didn’t have a driver’s license!
