Congratulations Kids

We like to watch some of the TV food shows. One of the recent shows was a bake off between pairs of kids (12 siblings). It all started on January 5, 2026, with pairs of siblings assigned to cook certain type of dishes. The team that did the best baking wins $25,000. Last week, after nine weeks of elimination, the winners were announced. Judges Duff Goldman and Kardea Brown announced the winners were (“A little drum roll, please!”) Abigail Wolf, 15, and her brother, Kenneth Wolf, 10, won the Championship. Where are they from you might ask? Answer: On a farm in Geneseo, IL. Again, “Congratulations!”

Civil War Presentation

If you’re a history buff and are interested in the American Civil War I’d suggest you drive out to historic Bishop Hill, Illinois, on Saturday, May 16, 2026. The“2026 Bishop Hill Civil War Day Bishop Hill Heritage” will present a living History encampment in the village park with programs on every hour. The Company D, IL 57th Volunteer Infantry will be at the event. Historian Dan Dauw will also present two programs on the Civil War in the Military Room at the Henry County Historical Museum, 202 Park St., Bishop Hill, IL. The presentations will be at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 16.

Sports

If you read this column (and why would you?) you know I’m a big fan of Notre Dame, both men and women teams. I could watch basketball Superstar Hannah Hidalgo everyday as she works the hard boards. I’ve never seen such an amazing basketball player. She is a junior so luckily we will be able to see her one more year after which I’m sure she will go with the pros. Last weekend they lost in tournament play. They could have won the game, but why Coach Niele Ivay had Hidalgo waste several precious seconds before going for the winning shot is beyond me. I think Coach Ivey is an awesome coach, but I sure think it was a bad call from the bench. Oh, well, it was a great season. I think UConn takes it all unless a meteor hits the earth! Unrelated, but we think the man who co-hosts the TV show, “Love it or Lose It” looks like the Iowa Hawkeye’s men’s basketball coach.

Deer Me

We visited our daughter and family last Saturday at Lockport, IL. She showed us a photo she took last week of 7 deer in their backyard. A few years ago she took a photo of two coyotes in the same place. Also, they have a raccoon that has found a way to get into their garbage container. Now you might think they live in the country. Nope! They live in the city. They do have a small woods in their backyard, but hardly room for a wildlife refuge!!!

Humor

Why couldn’t the pony sing karaoke? Ans: She was a little horse.

I have an alarm clock that swears at me instead of beeping. It is a rude awakening.

There is a new restaurant in town that advertises complete peace and quiet. Kids meals start at $150.00.
