5 for her, 5 for me - By Dan Dauw

5 for her, 5 for me

Caught, cleaned, ready for the frying pan so it shows in the photograph. Last week we tried our luck again for some rainbows at Centennial Park in Rock Falls. It was dark when we arrived and there was only one other angler fishing compared to 26 when we left. The limit is 5 each. So often it seems the last trout of the 5 you’re allowed to keep is hard to catch. That’s how it was with Lorna, but she finally caught #5 around 9 a.m. We used minnows for bait. The smallest trout went 9” and the longest was 13 ½ inches. I was surprised at how nice size the trout were.  Brian Herron and Jeff Scheider, both from Geneseo, were there and they caught their limit of rainbows. Brian said he hooked into something really big, but couldn’t see what it was. The big one that ‘gotta way! Trout don’t freeze well so these 10 plus what we catch this coming week, means we should be eating fish for awhile and “that’s just fine!”

Civil War Days @ Bishop Hill

Todd DeDecker and those nice folks in Bishop Hill, IL, will be hosting a big three day Civil War Days event on May 6, 7. and 8, 2023. Friday, May 6th, is for school children with Saturday and Sunday events open for the public. On the weekend there will be a vintage baseball game. In the morning there will Civil War reenactors performing drills at Coopers Field. At 10 a.m. General U.S. Grant (Dan Hughey) will address any concerned citizens about a possible attack by rebels. Also, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Dan Dauw will present a program on the Civil War in the meeting room at the Henry County Historical Museum, 2 blocks west of main street. At 12 noon, Sheryl Hinman will present a program on “Civil War Female Spies” in the Steeple Bldg. Museum. Civil War period music will be provided by the 33rd band at the Gazebo in the park at 1 p.m. An Artillery demonstration will be held at Cooper’s Field at 2 p.m. There will be a Medical demonstration at the park. There will also be a Civil War Ball in front of the Steeple Bldg., or at the Colony School. I may not have covered all the events on that weekend, but rest assured if should be an entertaining and interesting time in Bishop Hill.

 Fish Fallacies

1)     Birds do not stock ponds with fish. Fish eggs eaten by birds are quickly digested. Fish eggs die fast when removed from water.

2)     When fish appear miraculously in an isolated pond or lake, it is because someone stocked the body of water. It wasn’t from rain or birds.

3)     The grass carp is the largest member of the minnow family in Illinois and was introduced into our state by, yeah, you guessed it, China!

 TV Commercials

Do you have some favorites? My favorites are from AT&T, Progressive, and State Farm. Not so much are Liberty, Idaho potatoes, and most all truck commercials. Many years ago, guess who did a local commercial for Long John Silver in Moline. The other person in the commercial was James Zahara.

 Humor

Jerry Myhre is a big game hunter. The other day he was driving along a highway in Wisconsin when he came to a fork in the road. A highway sign there read: “BEAR LEFT,” so he went home. In my younger days and single, I had a date with a lady dentist. Afterwards I took her home and she said, “I had a great time, now see me in six months.” I heard last week that a deer stopped in at Dr. Jeff Hirschfelder’s office.  The deer said, “Dr. Jeff, I need braces!”  The good doctor asked, “Why do you think that?” The deer said, “Because I have buck teeth!”

Preview for next Week: Dangerous Weather, Fading Footsteps, Jokes, etc.
