It's All About Sweet Corn! - By Dan Dauw

Dinosaur on Wolf Road

He’s big and green. His lower jaw is open for business! Head east on Cleveland Road on to Wolf Road for a mile or two. Using a little of your imagination you will see the giant green dino looking north.

RI Auction Company

Last week I had a chance to visit this place. Unbelievable!!!!! It is “the” largest firearm auction house in the “entire” world. The warehouse is huge with thousands and thousands of collectable firearms, swords, uniforms, etc.., etc. All firearms are tagged and very neatly displayed. It would take months just to look at all of them. I mean, we are talking some serious business here. There were several employees with computers in various rooms. As you can imagine, the security is very tight. I won’t go into detail, but I needed to get an appraisal on a rare revolver that an organization owns. On August 25-27, the RIA is going to have an auction. While that auction will be big, their next auction in September will be even bigger with bidding from all over the world. All I can say is that Rock Island Auction Company is one amazing place.

Steve Alexander

It is sad that this nice fellow recently passed away. We would see Steve at the Maple City Band concerts. His wife, Jane, played in the band. May he rest in peace and our condolences to Jane and family.

August

This month was named in honor of Augustus Caesar who was related to Julius Caesar. Augustus was born in 63 B.C. to A.D. 14. I only met him once. Seemed like a nice chap! August might be another hot month so make sure to drink plenty of water. The amount of water retained by the body decreases with age. Don’t drink liquids with caffeine, alcohol or large amounts of sugar.

Stingray

I recently came across my old “Fisherman’s Diary.” It was kind of fun looking back at some of the fishing trips I took. In August, 1960, my dad and I fished at Treasure Island, FL. I landed a 20 pound stingray. I caught it on shrimp, using a #2 size hook and 20 lb. test line. I can remember it was really hot and it took a long time to bring it in.

Airplane Jokes

From a flight attendant, “Sorry for the bumpy ride. Our pilot was just dodging some trees.” From the pilot, “We’re beginning our descent now. Hopefully, on purpose!” From another pilot, “We’re next in line for takeoff. So, as soon as we back up the airplane, and the rubber band is tight. Away we go!”

Vintage Farm Equipment Show

This nice event, held at Bridge Park, Atkinson, will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2023, with registration at 8 a.m. There will be horse-drawn farm equipment, farm tractors and equipment, lawn & garden tractors, vintage farm trucks and motorcycles, blacksmithing demonstrations, food & drinks available, J.C. Old Fashion ice cream and much more. There will be two presentations (10 and 11 a.m.) by Dan Dauw on the U.S. Navy and ships. It’s all free to the public.

Sweet Corn

I’m sure there are other places selling sweet corn, but we get ours at Olson’s farm off of Grange Rd., Dwight and Connie Francis off of Wolf Road, Fisherman Dave Johnson’s relatives stand at the first light heading east from Hwy 6. Another place is on Rt. 82 about a mile north of Geneseo. Of course, Strawberry Flats off Wolf Rd is a trip worthwhile. Whatever, it’s all excellent! Our 50 tomato plants are doing great. I think we have received just amount of the heavenly wet drops and hot, humid temps to make a super harvest. Sweet corn & tomatoes. Doesn’t get much better than that! Well, maybe add a ribeve! Thank you, Mother Nature!

Senior Humor

One nice thing about forgetting names and faces is you keep meeting new people every day! You know you’re getting old when you stoop to tie your shoelaces and ask yourself, “What else can I do while I’m down here?” Another example on getting old is you can’t find your glasses without your glasses!
